People Aren’t Talking Enough About…

☘️ The WNBA in Boston 🏀

When I say people aren’t talking about it enough, the people is the WNBA. At least that’s what Connecticut Sun star DiJonai Carrington had to say in her post game presser following their night battle against the LA Sparks from TD Garden.

I would typically say something like “live from TD Garden”, but it wasn’t. At least not on television it wasn't. Seems odd. First WNBA game in Boston, from the historic TD Garden, over 19,000 thousand tickets sold for a sold out arena, and one of the best teams in the WNBA. But it wasn’t on TV.

Carrington tweeted out the following Tuesday morning, just under 8 hours from game time:

She didn’t stop their either. In her postgame she was asked about the tweet and responded pretty candidly, “I feel like Connecticut as a franchise is historically disrespected… So sometimes if you want something you gotta go out there and do it for yourself. So that’s what I did for us.”

Carrington also expressed her displeasure for the lack of promotion from the WNBA, “I think there could have been a lot more publicity or promo from the top. Connecticut had announced that we were having this game probably almost a year ago. … There was ample time to do what needed to get done.”

The game was announced last December, and despite the crowd draw of 19,125 people, the only way to view the game was through the league’s livestream on twitter or the WNBA League Pass.

It was the most attended Connecticut Sun game in the franchise’s history. The Sun defeated the Sparks, 69-61.

On This Day…

In 1885, US National Championship Men’s Tennis in Newport, Island. I’m doing this one STRICTLY to get this GOATs picture in the newsletter. I’m talking Richard Sears.

On this day he won his FIFTH consecutive US singles title. He beat a cat named Godfrey M. Brinley. These two probably had the most respectful game of tennis of all time.

🏈 Go Ball Bo!

After an impressive preseason, Broncos first-round pick Bo Nix will be the QB to start the season for Denver when they take the field against Seattle on Sept. 8. It will be the first time a rookie QB has started for the Broncos since…. John Elway in 1983, and we all know how that went.

Bo was battling it out with veteran back up QB Jarret Stidham all camp, but Head Coach Sean Payton started to give most of first team reps to Bo early this week. Nix has lead the Broncos offense to points on six of his seven drives in the preseason.

Nix was the 12th pick in the NFL Draft and played his college ball at Oregon (transferred from Ole Miss).

💸 Elly Elly Elly! Oy Oy Oy!

For those of you unfamiliar with a young man by the name of Elly De La Cruz, he’s good at the game of baseball. Yesterday, Elly joined an ELITE group of major leaguers in the history of the MLB who have both power and speed.

Elly stole third base in the fifth inning to get over the 60 stolen base mark, along with the 20+ home runs he’s already hit this year. He becomes the fifth player all time to do this. Ronald Acuna did it last season for the Atlanta Braves, but before that, no player had done it since Ricky Henderson in 1990.

B. Cleveland Browns! Despite Houston, Jacksonville, and Detroit never appearing in a Super Bowl, all three cities have hosted one. Cleveland is the only franchise to never play in a Super Bowl AND never host one.
