On This Day…

On this date in 1989, the city of San Francisco was ready for their Giants to take on the Oakland Athletics in Game 3 of the World Series. Only one problem, mother nature had other ideas…

Right before the game started, an Earthquake struck the city and the television went black around the world. You can hear people clamoring in the background in the video above. An extremely eerie moment in sports history and the history of television.

Today’s Featured Story…

🏀 Here’s Why You Need to Tune into the WNBA Finals

Maybe you saw the shot heard around the social media world last night when Sabrina Ionescu hit a game-winning three pointed with a second left on the clock. But if you didn’t here’s what you need to know:

The New York Liberty are up 2 games to 1 on the Minnesota Lynx in a 5 game series, with the next game taking place tomorrow night. The Lynx have their back against the wall, but they have their home crowd to cheer them on and hopefully extend the series to a decisive game 5.

Some of the best players in the WNBA are in this series, most notably Sabrina Ionescu and Breanna Stewart of the Liberty and Napheesa Collier of the Lynx. These woman are UNREAL, they play the game the right way and can light up the stats sheet at any moment. Not only do these teams have some big names, they have not so big names that are absolute ballers.

The Liberty are rounded out by WNBA veteran Courtney Vandersloot, Second-Team All WNBA Jonquel Jones, and Leonie Fiebich, who never shys away from contact. On the other side of the court, the Lynx have Courtney Williams and Kayla McBride, two prolific scorers who can take over a game in the blink of an eye.

So why watch? Why NOT watch! These girls can absolutely ball. And outside of that, the games have been iconic. Games one and three were highlighted by massive comebacks. One by the Lynx, one by the Liberty. There’s been big shots, crazy plays, clutch shots, and controversial calls. It has everything you want.

The energy in the arenas have been amazing. Both the Liberty and the Lynx have set record attendance marks this series, and the fans come LOUD. Plus, both these teams have some interesting history. The Liberty have been to 5 WNBA Finals, and have yet to win one.

The Liberty made it into the the championship series in 1997, 1999, 2000, 2002, and 2023. The Lynx kind of have the opposite luck, they started their WNBA existence really poorly. From 1999 to 2010, they only made the playoffs twice. Then all of a sudden in 2011, they broke through and won their first WNBA Finals. Well, it wasn’t really all of a sudden. The Lynx drafted UConn star Maya Moore and never looked back. Winning 4 WNBA championships in 7 years. This is their first appearance back in the Finals since 2017.

If that’s not enough to get you fired up about Game 4 tomorrow in Minnesota, then I don’t think you have a pulse.

Yesterday, In a Nutshell

NLCS: We’ve got back-and-forth blowouts in the NLCS! Dodgers defeat the Mets, 8-0, in Game 3! Taking a 2-1 series lead! Four strong innings from Walker Buehler followed by a bullpen clinic led to the shutout! An O-BOMB in the 8th added on the insurance runs!

🏀 WNBA Finals Game Three: What. A. Ballgame. It was all Lynx for almost the whole game, until suddenly, the Liberty started CREEPING back into it. The Liberty were able to cut a 15-point deficit and take the lead with a minute left. 10 seconds left, Liberty ball in a tied game, and Sabrina Ionescu hit a step back DAGGER to go up by 3 with exactly one second left. Ice in her veins. Liberty up 2-1 (out of 5) in the series.

🏈 Pittsburgh Steelers QB Russell Wilson continued to take reps with the first team offense despite the teams successful start to the season with Justin Fields at QB. Wilson was hurt to start the season, which gave way to Fields to lead the team. Now that Wilson is healthy, it seems if Steelers coach Mike Tomlin doesn’t really care about how well the team has started the season…

Let me tell you, this could arguably be the most calming song of all time. Elite elevator music.

🗣 Quote OTD🗣

“Life is the art of drawing without an eraser.”

Not going to lie, I enjoyed this quote prior to seeing what this guy looked like. But after seeing this pic.. I like it that much more. Dude is really smokin a pipe and just posted up ready for a flick. Legend.

I’ll tell ya what man, image life without this guy? How are we getting ANYTHING out of the oven? How did people do it before? Did they just have tougher hands?

Trivia Answer:

D. Los Angeles Angels! The Angels of Anaheim have not made the postseason in 10 years! That was 2014, the only appearance of Mike Trout’s career, and he’s one of the best to ever do it. The Angels had two of the GOATs in Ohtani and Trout and still couldn’t make it into the postseason…
