Stump Story
🎤 A Rare Wholesome Postgame Moment

After the Jags lost to the Bills in Jacksonville on Saturday in the Wild Card Round, it was obviously a tough moment for the team. It’s hard to look at any positives in a moment like that, but it was Jacksonville reporter Lynn Jones who tried to show some positivity.
The postgame press conference is a part of sports unlike anything we see in other professions. Can you imagine a bad day at work, and then having to go answer questions from media members, all with their own agendas and articles that they want to write?
Sure, it comes with the territory of working in professional sports, and with the money they get, that’s something they just have to do, blah, blah, blah. Yes, I hear that, it makes sense, and nobody is going to feel sorry for the coaches and players who have to answer questions.
HOWEVER.
There is never a time when a little bit of positivity is a bad idea.
Hearing questions such as “What do you think went wrong today?” or “Can you talk about why you got away from the run game in the second half?” Those are great and all, and maybe what everybody wants to know, but on Saturday, we had a moment that maybe you’ve seen by now, because it went viral in an instant.
Lynn Jones-Turpin, the Associate Editor for the Jacksonville Free Press, said this was not planned but had this to say to Head Coach Liam Coen after the game.
“I’m going to tell you, congratulations on your success, young man. You hold your head up. You guys have had a most magnificent season. You did a great job out there today. You just hold your head up, OK? Ladies and Gentlemen, Duval. You keep it going. We got another season.”
The sincerity in her voice, and then the respectful tone in his “Thank you, ma’am.” Everything about this exchange was golden.
It looked like Coen was in defense mode all interview, and then you see a bit of a weight lifted off his face when he realizes that there was no question, and just a compliment. She got him to smile in a very tough moment. Unreal!
A few journalists have taken to social media to criticize Jones for wasting time and not asking a question. They have been quickly handled by the masses on Twitter. Instead of fighting for less of this, it should be shown that it’s ok to take moments to say encouraging and positive things like this, especially in situations where they aren’t often said.
Lynn Jones has become an overnight sensation, with multiple interviews having been released. She has talked about how she has been a journalist since the 70s! That’s a lot of mileage in the journalism realm. If she wants to take 30 seconds to tell her team’s Head Coach that he’s done an awesome job in his first year, she can do that any time she wants.
There’s a lot of football-related stuff we could go over today, but this was the coolest moment of the weekend!
Thank you, Lynn Jones, for the moment!
