ON THIS DAY🗓️

On this day in 1983, Kansas City all-star George Brett hit a go-ahead home run in the top of the 9th inning against Goose Gossage and the New York Yankees.

Or so he thought… the Yankees manager challenged that Brett had more than the legal amount of pine tar (a sticky substance that helps players keep their grip on the wood bat). The umpire agreed with the Yankees manager, Brett was ruled out, and the game was over. Brett was incredibly upset, for obvious reasons, and charged at the home plate umpire.

Kansas City immediately protested the game with the league office, and the office ruled with Kansas City. Months later, the game was resumed after the Brett home run, and the Royals prevailed, 5-4.

It is one of the most well known and controversial calls in baseball history.

STUMP STORY OF THE DAY✍️

Life At Camp: A Quick Breakdown

As training camp gets set to get started in the NFL, we wanted to take a quick second and share what life may look like for players during camp.

Let’s go camping!!! It’s about that time of the year where NFL players head to their respective training camp locations and prepare for arguably the hardest, and for some, career defining weeks of their football lives. Not only is this a physical challenge, it is incredibly mentally draining for players.

Here’s what almost all of the days look like: breakfast, early morning practice, lunch followed by meetings, then typically an hour or two break, a low-impact practice without pads or contact, then dinner, more meetings, lights out. On repeat.

Some teams may practice in the afternoons and flip some of these around a little, it depends on a lot of factors (weather, coaching philosophy, players preference, etc.). Regardless, every team typically gets rolling around 6:00 AM and will finish up around 9:00 PM.

That’s a lot. Players have to be locked in at all times, one little error can mean your career is over. A lot of the players “off time” is spent in one of two place: in the training room or finding a make-shift bed. If you aren’t getting some type of treatment, you are likely taking a nap.

Camp in the NFL used to be much more physically demanding, under new player-safety protocols the time on the field and hitting are much less than in previous generations of the NFL. Now, staff and players make up for the lost practice time with much more time in the meeting rooms. Which for younger players, especially, can be equally as challenging.

This time of the year is when players, and staff alike, feel the pressure and challenges of working in professional sports. They are committed to the team, rarely see their family, and are often sleep deprived. It’s a real grind, for everyone involved.

So why the heck do teams still do this? Well, for one, the game is so complicated that players and staff need so many repetitions to get things right. Teams need time to coach, train, and learn about their players. Their strengths, weaknesses, and become familiar with what they bring to the table. This among other things like comradery, relationships, and building a winning culture are why training camp is so imperative.

Training camp season is upon us, it’s time for your favorite team to lay the foundation for what will be a long season.
