On This Day…

🥊 On this day in Evander Holyfield’s life… it’s a tough one. Not only did he lose to Riddick Bowe in 1992 and hand over the undisputed world heavyweight boxing crown, he also lost to Lennox Lewis in 1999 on this day.

His bout against Lennox Lewis went 12 rounds and lost by unanimous decision, once again handing over the heavyweight champion of the world. Sorry Evander, I’m sure you’re looking forward to it being November 14th.

Today’s Stump Story…

🏀 NBA Seedings Check! 12 Games In!

When do we start talking about seedings? Is 12 games too early? Probably is, but let’s go for it! Two teams that are the surprises in the young NBA Season!

Gonna start off with this…

Guess where the Eastern Conference’s three-seeded Orlando Magic would rank in the West. We are just 12 games into the season, so the disparity between East and West can’t be that big, right? The Magic would be the 11 seed! If the season ended they would not even make the play-in tournament!

We usually see this In January or February, but we’re getting this right out of the gate this season. The 5-6 Brooklyn Nets are one game back from getting a home playoff series. Yes, it’s only been 12 games, but it’s interesting to look at these sort of things. As more West teams play West teams, this will slowly tighten up, but the overall pattern of the West being overall a significantly better conference than the East still remains.

It doesn’t help that the Bucks are 3-8 and the Sixers are 2-8, both just two losses away from being the worst team in the Eastern Conference.

Alright, enough of the doom and gloom, let’s talk about the big stories. There are two of them. Are we in 2018? Because the Golden State Warriors are 9-2!

I’m watching their game against the Mavs, and they are an absolute army. They have their leader and then a bunch of guys ready to go to war. They played 11 different guys! That’s unheard of! But that’s what they’ve been doing all year, and it’s working. Their only losses have been to the 12-0 Cavs, and to the Clippers in a game where Steph went down with an injury. They are beating good teams! What’s the ceiling for this team? I have no idea, but the Warriors have had a phenomenal start to this season and yesterday was on different in Klay Thompson’s return!

The second headline would be the aforementioned Cleveland Cavs! We’ve talked about them already in our Stump’s, but NBA teams don’t go on streaks like that. You always lose a close game here or there. Hopefully, this isn’t the jinx but the Cavs have started 12-0! They are the biggest surprise so far in the young NBA season!

A stump story about the Warriors and Cavs. My goodness! The more things change…the more things remain the same!

Yesterday, In a Nutshell

🏈 A couple seasons ended yesterday for two of the NFL’s bigger names. The Chicago Bears parted ways with their offensive coordinator Shane Waldron in his first year in charge of Chicago’s offense. It’ll be interesting to see how this impacts their rookie QB Caleb Williams and his development. On the player side of things, Cowboys QB Dak Prescott will undergo season-ending surgery to repair the partial avulsion of his hamstring. Another LOST season for the Cowboys as they head into an interesting offseason.

⚾️ The Silver Slugger awards were announced yesterday and Jose Altuve and Mookie Betts led the field by picking up the award for the seventh time. It’s no shock to see MVP front runners Shohei Ohtani and Aaron Judge receive the award, but it’s great to see some new names on there as well. Here’s the full list of winners: LINK

🏆️ The second College Football Playoff rankings were released yesterday and the top four look like this: Oregon, Ohio State, Texas, and Penn State. Followed by BYU, Tennessee, Notre Dame, Miami, Alabama, Ole Miss, and Georgia. However, because the CFP awards conference champions over non-champions, Boise State would get in over Georgia as of right now. It’s shocking to see UGA not in the CFP, but it’s safe to say Kirby Smart and the Bulldogs have looked SHAKEY this year. I think we’re all hoping Army somehow sneaks in there this year, but we’ll see how it all shakes out soon enough.

❌ Lincoln Riley and the USC football program have had their fair share of problems to deal with this year, but now they have another one. The program has been fined $50,000 and placed on a one-year probation because of a violations of “on- and off-field coaching activities. Basically, the NCAA only allows a certain amount of humans to be on the field coaching during a practice, and USC exceeded that number. So now, they pay a some what marginal price for what the program is worth financially.

Trivia Answer:

D. University of Massachusetts - Amherst. UMass, which has been competing in the Atlantic 10 Conference in all sports other than football (which competes independently without a conference), will be officially joining the MAC in all sports in 2025. This will be the second time the football program has competed in MAC football, as they were a member from 2012 to 2015.
