ON THIS DAY 🗓

On this day in 1973…
Secretariat wins the Kentucky Derby with a time of 1:59.40. This time is still the fastest time recorded during the Derby. For reference, yesterdays winner, Mytik Dan, won the Derby with a time of 2:03.34. That’s almost a full four second difference.
Secretariat won the race with Ron Turcotte as the jockey.
STUMP STORY OF THE DAY✍

A Closer Look at Mystik Dan and the 2024 Kentucky Derby
The 150th edition of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky did not disappoint. The margin of victory by Mystik Dan was one of the closest finishes in almost 30 years. The horse finished at 18-1 odds and overcame a last turn deficit with a sprint up the inside position and was able to hold off Sierra Leonne and Forever Young. Mystik Dan poked his head out at the right time to get the victory.
Jockey Brian Hernandez has been mostly underrated his whole career. They can’t say that anymore! While yesterday was the marquee victory of his career, he also won on Friday as well. The Kentucky Oaks is held the day before the Derby and is much lesser know. The key difference is the Derby allows all Thoroughbreds to compete, the Oaks only allows three-year-old fillies (female horses). Fillies rarely compete in the Derby, but it is not unheard of. Hernandez becomes only the fourth jockey to EVER win both the Oaks and the Derby. Hernandez won Friday riding Thorpedo Anna.
Mystik Dan’s owner, Lance Gasaway, also had a very sentimental day with the victory. On May 4th 2023, Gasaway’s father Clint passed away, Clint was the man who initially got Lance into horse breeding and ownership. One year to the date of his passing, his son Lance and his horse Mystik Dan, were winners at the Kentucky Derby. Before Lance left his home in Arkansas to make the trip to the Derby, he stopped at his fathers grave and planted a flower. The flower bloomed alongside an amazing win a few days later.
Mystik Dan’s trainer, Kenny McPeek, got a rather large monkey off his back with this win as well. He became the first trainer since 1952 to win both the Oaks and the Derby. Despite more than $120 million in total earnings in 13,474 starts from the horses he trained, he had never won the big one. McPeek is a Kentucky man, born and raised. He is based out of Lexington, Kentucky, and is one of the most well respected and profitable horse trainers in the whole sport. McPeek is finally a winner is his own backyard.
From the outside looking in, this may seem just like another Kentucky Derby, but for these men and this one horse, it’s a whole lot more. The horse, the jockey, the owner, and trainer, were all first timers. In a sport that is so often dominated by the best of the best, it’s amazing to see underdogs like this take home the big one. It was a historical weekend in Louisville, KY, and I’m just glad we got one hell of a race!
🎙SONG OF THE DAY
Lazy Song - Bruno Mars

One of those days: LAZZZZZYYYYY Sunday. Do I smell… a nap cooking? Yeah I think I do. What a beautiful day to be a little cozy. Also, what a weird music video.

Glue Guy of the Day
Hungover Breakfast Sandwich

If you haven’t drank before, let me paint you a picture: you wake up with a headache, an empty stomach, and you need something greasy to quench your pain. What do you look to? What will make you feel better? A big ol breakfast sammy. It’s simple, yet elegant. You can order in or make it yourself, it’s flexible. Glue guy.

A. 34.5, now that’s a big trophy. You press that thing one too many times and you’re getting a sore shoulder. Make sure you stretch before the celebration.
