 The title of Monday’s Stump article was “This Could Go The Distance…” in reference to the World Series. This was after two games. That night, we had maybe of the greatest games in World Series history, and distance wise, it was the second longest time-wise lasting 6 hours and 39 minutes! Cinema!

I’m not saying the Stump title had something to do with that happening, but let’s just say there are whispers across the sports world that there may be a possible link. 🤷‍♂️

⚾️ The Numbers Behind The Marathon…

Talk about one for the ages. Man oh man this Series was great after 2 games, and what took place after that is something you would have to see to believe. Usually baseball highlight videos are 12-15 minutes. This one is 33 MINUTES! If you didn’t get a chance to watch this one, highly recommend skimming through this highlight video to see the second longest game in World Series history!

Here are some of the wild numbers associated with this game:

18 - The number of innings it took for the game to end! This is the second time ever a World Series game has gone this long, coincidentally it was the Dodgers when they faced the Red Sox in 2018! It Solo-HR in the bottom of the 18th that night that ended the marathon!

9 - The number of times Shohei Ohtani was on base in this game (an MLB record). He started the game going Double, HR, Double HR, and after that…HE WAS WALKED FIVE TIMES before the game was over! He ended up on base 9 times across 9 plate appearances. (4 was also the most intentional walks for a single player in a Word Series game ever.)This truly is other worldly. To start with those 4 at-bats, and then get walked that many times is unbelievable. No doubt one of the all-time greats.

1 - The number of outs recorded by Clayton Kershaw. The 37-year old Dodger great didn’t know if and when his number would get called in this series, but it came in the biggest of moments. In the 12th innings the Blue Jays had the bases loaded with 2 outs, and Dave Roberts called on the vet to get the final out. He came in, and he left the runners stranded. Ice!

10 - The number of pitchers used by a single team in a World Series game. both bullpens were excellent, but the Dodgers pen allowed just a single run across 13 1/3 innings. After the game, manager Dave Roberts was asked what he would have done had the game gone a 19th. He said it would have either been Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who had just pitched a complete game in Game 2, or second baseman Miguel Rojas!

17 - The game ended well after 2 AM on the east coast, and Game 4 was slated for 8 PM on Tuesday. There were 17 hours in between the conclusion of Game 3 and the start of Game 4!

19 - Combined pitchers who were used in the contest, the most in MLB postseason history.

23 - The number of players used by the Blue Jays in the game. The most in MLB postseason history.

37 - The number of runners left on base in the game. This moment sure had its offensive highs, but my god were there some dramatic moments with runners left on base. Each side had chances with the bases loaded in extras, but not a single run to show for it!

72 - From Triple A to the grandest stage of them all. There could be a lot of heroes that you point at for this game, but maybe none more than relief pitcher Will Klein, who pitched the final 4 innings of the game for LA! He had only thrown 14 postseason pitches up to this point in the season, and his most pitches in a single outing was 36, but he put the team on his back and threw 72 pitches in what will be the most memorable moment of his young career!

153 - The combined number of plate appearances between the two teams. You would think there may have been at least 20 runs scored in a game like this, but no. just 11. This was a World Series record in combined plate appearances.

609 - The number of pitches thrown in the game. Which funny enough is the 6th highest in World Series history………

Just kidding, this also is a World Series record! This game had more pitches than games 1 and 2 combined (549).

It was who else but Freddie Freeman to hit the walk-off HR in the bottom of the 18th to end the contest. What team could have the resolve to come back after a loss like this. Well we found out last night when the Blue Jays did not miss a beat, tying the series at two games a piece!
