STUMP STORY OF THE DAY✍️
Why Monty Williams’ Firing is Bad for the NBA…
Detroit Pistons coach Monty Williams, one year into his six year contract, was relieved of his duties yesterday.
Shocking news broke the NBA yesterday after the Detroit Pistons officially let go their head coach, Monty Williams, despite having 5-years and about $65 million left on his contract.
The new president of basketball operations Trajan Langdon, who was hired a month ago, had been having pretty regular meetings with Williams about the future of the organization. Despite this, Williams was let go directly by the owner, Tom Gores.
The Pistons may have been the worst team in the NBA last year, and have been historically bad the past 5 years, but that is not Williams’ doing. He led a very under talented roster, and did not have much support from the rest of the organization to acquire talent.
Williams is known across the NBA as an extremely talented coach, he thrives in developing players and getting more out of guys and squads with less talent. He led the Suns to the 2022 NBA Finals with an impressive 64 wins.
So why is this bad for the NBA? Other than the fact that a well respected man lost his job, the whole situation is pretty ugly. A year ago, Gores lured Williams to Detroit despite him publicly announcing his intent on stepping away from coaching to take care of his wife with breast cancer. Gore courted Williams with a historic contract offer and hoped he’d team up with his good friend and then general manger of the Pistons, Troy Weaver. One year after Williams chose the Pistons over an early retirement, he finds himself without a job.
This sets a bad precedent of job security in the NBA. Not only is that bad for culture, it’s bad for player development. Cade Cunningham, a former No. 1 overall pick, will now have three different head coaches in his first three years in the NBA. That can’t be helpful. It’s just bad for the franchise. Why would any coach go there now that they know there is no security, even if they sign a stupid high number contract. The number may look good, but there’s no guarantee you’ll get a job again.
This shows that owners are getting greedy, they want to win, and they want to win now, at all costs. The Pistons paying out $65 million to Williams is just bad business. It shows no loyalty. And I’m sure they won’t be the only organization who could do something like this. It’s already easy to loose your job in the NBA, but it seems like nobody gets any time anymore.
What the hell was Monty Williams supposed to do with that roster in one year? He couldn’t. It shows how of an organizational decision this in when Monty is already the top target of LeBron and the Lakers. Not to say that the Lakers are the best example of a team that has their shit together, but LeBron knows ball. Whether you like him or not, he knows ball.
I get it, Monty got paid the bag to walk away, but come on now. The money isn’t everything to these guys. They eat, sleep, and breath this stuff, and it’s unfair to their unloyalty.
