Good Morning, Stumpers!

⛳️ Yeah, we’ve got Jim Furyk in today’s Stump

On This Day

🔥 Furyk Goes LOW!

There’s not many scramble groups who can go this low in a single round of golf. But these pros, when they’re dialed in, the hole must feel like the size of a crater and everything is falling.

On this day in 2016, Jim Furyk fires the first ever 12-under par 58 in PGA Tour history en route to a T-5 at the Travelers Championship in Cromwell, Connecticut. That’s right, he shot 12 under and STILL didn’t win. He started the day at +1, finishing at -11, four off the lead. Crazy.

Glue Guy of the Day

🎾 New Name For You: Victoria Mboko

It’s always cool to see young stars in professional sports break onto the scene. The name today for you is Victoria Mboko and what she did in the Canadian Open.

First detail I have for you is this. When the year started, if we scrolled in the Women’s Tennis World Rankings, if we went all the way to No. 333, we would see the name Victoria Mboko. I’ll be completely honest with you, I like to think I know a good amount of tennis, I had zero clue the rankings even went that far.

But, they do, and that’s where Mboko was ranked. So the fact that she won a WTA Tour Event last night, and beat 4 Major Winners on her path to the title was an absolute shock. Anything else shocking? Oh yeah, she’s 18 years old!

On the Men’s side, Carlos Alcaraz (22 years old) and Jannik Sinner (23 years old) are the young superstars that have emerged. On the women’s side, Iga Swiatek (24 years old) and Coco Gauff (21 years old) carry the mantle of young superstars.

Today let’s talk about somebody who makes them all look like fossils! Born in 2006 (unreal to think about), Mboko stood the test of power on this run to win the Montreal Open last night.

On this run, she defeated Sofia Kenin, Coco Gauff (1 seed in the tournament), Elena Rybakina (3 seed in the tournament), and then last night, Naomi Osaka.

A little bit about this game, it was unconventional to say the least. She lost the first set, and then went on to win the last two, final ended, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1.

One more insane detail there. There was a total of 25 games, and then 13 of the games were service breaks. An up-and-down, unconventional, unpredictable game. When it counted the most, she came in the clutch. She had 9 total break point opportunities and she converted 8 of them. CLUTCH!

Started the year at World Rank 333, and now after yesterday, she just moved up 34!

18-years-old! Wow! Happy Friday!

The BIG Moments

🏈 It’s Preseason, But We’re Still Talking About It

The Stump Short Story: Three games last night, sure it is just preseason, but let’s take a second to chop about it. If you thought that Bengals-Eagles would have only been a great regular season, yes that would have been a great game, but this one was pretty fun too. Believe it or not, Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase started the game and balled out. 4 receptions and 77 yards for Chase and 2 TD throws for Joe Brrr. Darius Cooper was the standout WR for Philly with 82 yards and a TD. This game was a shootout all the way through, 34-27 Eagles! What else to report? I guess the tie. We had a tie between Raiders and Seahawks. We got to see some Aidan O’Connell and Drew Lock in that one.

Why it Matters: It’s just fun to talk about football. I know it’s preseason, but SUE US! We’re so close to some regular season action. As we say in our schedule, we’ve got three more games going on today.

🎾 Shelton Wins National Bank Open

The Stump Short Story: Yup, we’re double dipping in the world of Tennis. We’ll go with the American Ben Shelton, who just became the first American to win in the ‘Masters 1000’ hard-court event sine 2003! I mean if we want to talk about young tennis stars, we’d be remiss if we didn’t talk about the 22-year-old. He beat fellow-american Taylor Fritz in the semifinal, and then was able to take care of 11-seed Karen Khachanov (6-7, 6-4, 7-6). This is the biggest title of his young career and a great pump-up before the U.S. Open, which he has had success in before.

Why it Matters: Yesterday was a big day in the tennis world, and a big day for the young stars in particular. We’ve got the U.S. Open coming up, the last of the four majors this year, and we’ve been waiting for years for an American to bring it all home. Although it seems impossible when Alcaraz and Sinner are both healthy, but Shelton is riding momentum into Flushing, Queens.
