Thank You College Sports
Between basketball upsets and football firings, yesterday was wild in college sports...
If you are a fan of tournament style sports, you had a good day yesterday. Between the NBA Cup, UEFA Champions League, College Basketball tourneys, and a new CFP Ranking release, it was a huge day to be a tournament. We cover all of that, including the firing of Mack Brown at UNC, in today’s edition of the Daily Stump.

On This Day…
🏈 On this day in 1966, the NFL had it’s highest scoring game in it’s history.
There was a total of 113 points between the Washington team formally known as the Redskins and the New York Giants. Washington defeated the Giants, 72-41.
Today’s Stump Story…
🏈 Mack Brown Out at UNC
The University of North Carolina announced yesterday that legendary head ball coach, Mack Brown, will coach his last game with the program this weekend against NC State.
To retire or not retire, that is the question that now faces legendary head coach Mack Brown. Brown, 73, will coach the team in the regular-season finale against NC State on Saturday. A decision has not yet been made about whether he will coach the Tar Heels in their bowl game this season.
Coach Brown has gone a combined 113-78-1 in his two stints at North Carolina. If he does not coach another game in college football he will end his career with 288 total victories, the eight most by a head coach in FBS history. He’s the only coach with 100-plus wins at multiple FBS schools — 113 at UNC and 158 at Texas.
He reach the pinnacle of college football in 2005 when he won a national championship at Texas, the universities most recent. He spent 16 years as the head ball coach for the Longhorns.
Besides his time at UNC and UT, he was also the head coach at Appalachian State and Tulane, the first two stops in his head coaching career.
Brown, who spent some times working as an analyst for ESPN during his time between Texas and UNC, will most likely get offers to get in the booth. There has been no speculation whether or not Brown will take another coaching job, but he did announce publicly that he planned on returning to UNC in 2025.
Quick Hitters
🏀 What a day in Men’s College basketball. After losing yesterday, the (2) Huskies fell once again, this time it was to the Colorado Buffaloes. Another pair of ranked teams, (20) Texas A&M and (21) Creighton, both fell in their preseason tournaments as well. (6) Houston and (9) Alabama, battled it out allll the way through OT, but it was the Tide who rolled in the end. (5) Iowa State narrowly defeated Dayton in Maui, 89-84. The battle of two Titans, (1) Kansas and (11) Duke, went toe to toe in Las Vegas last night. It was a GREAT game, but the number one Jayhawks were winners, 75-72.
🏈 The newest College Football Playoff rankings were released last night, and BOY was it spicy. Most shockingly, the Alabama Crimson Tide are OUT of the playoff if it were to end today. The Indiana Hoosiers stay safely in the playoff, as they were placed in the 12th seed. Both Boise State and SMU represent the non-power four teams. Ohio State, Arizona State, Tennessee, Georgia, Penn State, and Notre Dame represent the non conference champions. Oregon, Miami U, and Texas fill out the 1-3 seeds.
⚽️ It was a beautiful day to watch some soccer! Here’s a quick recap of everything you missed in the Champions League:
Some BIGGGG blowouts went on - Atletico Madrid handled their business against Sparta Prague, 6-0. Bayer Leverkusen took on RB Salzburg, 5-0 Leverkusen. Sporting CP was no match for Arsenal, 5-1. Atalanta went to town against Young Boys, 6-1.
The surprise of the day came in the form of Manchester City, who tied with Feyenoord Rotterdam of the Dutch Eredivisie league. Haaland put two goals in the bin, and Man City lead three-nil late in the match. Rotterdam scored three times between the 75th and 89th minute to tie the match.
The match of the day came in the form of PSG vs Bayern Munich. PSG played with 10 men from the 56th minute on after Ousmane Dembele was booted from the match for a red card. PSG managed to keep the game close, but couldn’t managed to put one in the net.
