Yesterday we got to see a give-and-go alley-oop between LeBron James and Steph Curry. What a time to be alive! Team USA squeaked by Canada in an exhibition 🏀 game! And then in terms of ⚽️ USA Head Coach Gregg Berhalter IS OUT!!! Wild day for Team USA all around yesterday! In other news it’s going to be England-Spain in the EURO Final and Argentina-Colombia in the COPA Final! A lot of exciting sports on the horizon!

Former president Ronald Reagan returned to his professional roots and broadcasted the first inning of the MLB All-Star game with NBC sportscaster Vin Scully.
Reagan, a former sportscaster at radio stations WOC and WHO in Iowa, provided a national TV audience with the color commentary as Scully handled the play-by-play.

South Africa to the NBA: Cele
4 colleges and a NBA Summer League contract that never came to fruition, this South African baller finally gets his change in the NBA.
The NBA Summer League always brings along with it some new guys to root for from different backgrounds who haven’t had the most conventional basketball careers. This year, I wanted to focus on the New York Knicks and their South African superstar, Samkelo Cele.
Cele spent the last few years in the Basketball Africa League and is fresh off of a First Team honors election. There have been talks for him to jump to American basketball but he never cemented a contract or got the official offer. Last year, a deal fell through with the Chicago Bulls to join their 2023 Summer League roster.
Cele spent his collegiate basketball career in America at four different institutions, including 2 Junior Colleges: Northeastern Oklahoma A&M and the University of Science & Arts OK Drovers (which I have NEVER heard of). His two D1 schools came in the form of Southern University an Marist College.
Cele entered the 2023 BAL season with the Cape Town Tigers, a team that had seen the Tigers eliminated in the quarter-finals of the playoffs the previous two seasons.
In the 2024 season, Cele saved the Tigers from another quarter-final exit with a stunning three-point shot to send the game to overtime with 1 second left on the clock. The team rallied around him, Cele couldn’t be stopped in OT, and the Tigers went on to win.
Cele is one of two South Africans who are a part of this year’s NBA Summer League. The other being Nick Ongenda of the Atlanta Hawks. Cele, however, has an even more unique story, as Cele lived in Durban, South Africa, until his late teens. Ongenda spent most of his life in Canada despite being born in South Africa and representing the nation abroad.
South Africa is not a nation known for its basketball prowess, but there are signs that the sport is growing. Cele is signed to Roc Nation, which represents NBA players LaMelo Ball, Kevin Porter Jr, Trey Burke, and Danny Green, among others.
The Cape Town Tigers had faced criticism in recent years for their high percentage of Americans on the team, but the growth of Cele has quieted some of the haters. Cele now looks to grow the South African game in the NBA.
The Knicks open their Summer League season in Las Vegas on the 13th of July at 5pm ET. Check out our guy Cele.
