Tar Heel Coronation

The Bill Belichick reign has officially begun in Chapel Hill

It doesn’t get much better than the Rams and Niners on Thursday night football, right? Right…? Well, apparently it does get better. A different NFL name was welcomed to the College Football world, and it was a big day in North Carolina because of it. UConn and Notre Dame went toe-to-toe in South Bend, plus a legendary basketball announcer is CANCER FREE BABYYYYY!

Today’s Stump Story…

🏈 Belichick Introduced at UNC

It’s officially official, six-time Super Bowl winning coach Bill Belichick is really a Tar Heel.

If you told me that the second-winningest coach in NFL history had to go to a struggling college program to find his next job, I’d be shocked, I might even laugh in your face. But it’s true. The most successful NFL in the modern NFL era has officially left the NFL for college football.

I’m not sure if he was blackballed by the NFL or if Belichick truly just wanted to move on from life as a professional sports coach, perhaps craving a new challenge. It doesn’t really even matter anymore, because it happened. It’s real, no matter how it came about, no matter why.

His father, Steve, served as an assistant coach in Chapel Hill from 1953-1955. During the introductory press conference, UNC chancellor Lee Roberts pulled out a copy of the 1954 North Carolina media guide and read an excerpt about Steve Belichick and his 2-year-old son ‘William Steven Belichick’. The chancellor welcomed back Bill to Carolina.

Belichick replaces Mack Brown, the winningest coach in North Carolina history, and will also replace Brown as the oldest coach in college football at the ripe age of 72.

Football at UNC has largely taken a back seat to basketball, as the last conference championship came in 1980. But the commitment to Belichick both financially and morally is a massive step in the right direction for the university. A five-year, $50 million deal is a big time commitment, and Belichick already sits in the top 10 of the highest-paid coaches in college football.

It’s no secret that Belichick will bring the squad with him, but only time will tell if Billy Boy will be able to win, and win big.

Quick Hitters

🏈 Thursday Night Football: Yuck. What an UGLY game in the NFL last night. Neither team managed to score a touchdown, and the off and on rain made for a pretty tough watch. I feel bad for anyone who depends on a Niner or Ram in fantasy, because they just might of blown your playoff matchup. The Rams were able to run out the clock and the game ended with the final score of 12-6, Rams.

🎤 Legendary ESPN college basketball analyst Dick Vitale said yesterday that his most recent scan showed he is cancer-free. Vitale is a member of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame and the College Basketball Hall of Fame. He has been with ESPN since 1979, the year the network launched and called ESPN’s first college basketball broadcast. Congratulations, baby.

🏀 (8) Notre Dame Fighting Irish defeat (2) UConn Huskies at the Purcell Pavilion in South Bend. The Irish were leading from start to finish, and the Huskies just couldn’t quite keep up. Hannah Hidalgo, one of the best players in the country and Notre Dame’s star, was a Husky killer once again with 29 points in the game. The Huskies made a third-quarter comeback but the Irish pulled away late, 79-68 Notre Dame.

Trivia Answer:

D. Charles Woodson. Woodson won the award in 1996, beating out the OTHER Heisman favorite, Peyton Manning. Woodson is still the only defensive player to ever win the award. Colorado DB Travis Hunter is hoping to join him this Saturday.
