⛳️ Sunday, at the Open
Can Sam Burns pull off his first major victory?
Good Morning, Stumpers!
What’s up, gang. It’s Sunday, and you know what that means? NAP DAY! If you can, enjoy today. If you can’t, enjoy today anyways. We have the US Open and some good soccer and basketball. We’ll dive into the Open, Caitlin Clark, and Brad Marchand. If you want a good song for a slow start to the day, check out today’s song of the day. Let’s roll!

On This Day
🤝 A Trade That Changed the NBA

There’s a few trades that changed the course of the NBA in the 2010’s, and this was one of them.
On this day in 2019, the New Orleans Pelicans sent Anthony Davis to the LA Lakers for Brandon Ingram, Lonzo Ball, Josh Hart, and 3 future first round picks. It’s crazy to think that if the Pelicans kept all three of these guys as their core, they’d be a dang good squad. AD went on to win a ring with LeBron in LA!
Today’s Trivia
US OPEN Sunday... who's your winner? |
Yesterday’s Trivia Answer: A. Sam Burns! BURNSYYY! Another solid day on a very tough course puts Sam Burns in the final pairing for today! He sits as -4 with a one-stroke lead over J.J. Spaun and Adam Scott.
Glue Guy of the Day
🏒 A Bruin Turned Panther

Glue Guy of the Day: Brad Marchand, Florida Panthers
There’s not many players in the NHL that move the needle for me more than Brad Marchand, and he proved his worth once again last night. When the Panthers took advantage of the Boston Bruins fire sale at the trade deadline and added Brad Marchand, it showed how hungry they were for a back-to-back Stanley Cup Championship.
Marchand has been a stud for Florida all playoffs long, and Florida needed him in Edmonton last night. He got the scoring going early with a first period goal, and then added a second in the third period to really put the Oilers’ backs against the wall. He has the second highest +/- on the team this postseason, showing how well the team performs with him on the ice.
For everything he does on the ice relating to goal scoring, I’d argue it’s the other stuff he does that is even more valuable. This guy plays with so much emotion, and you can just feel his presence on the ice. He knows when to be aggressive and when to back off and play smart. That showed in his third period coast-to-coast goal that was a real punch to the gut for the Oilers. While Sam Bennett, Matthew Tkachuk, Aleksander Barkov, and Sam Reinhart get a lot of the attention, Marchand is the piece that puts this team over the hump.
One win standing between Florida and another Stanley Cup Championship, and if Brad Marchand has anything to say about it, it’s go time.
Brad Marchand? GLUE. GUY.
Yesterday’s Moments

⛳️ Day Four at the US Open
The Stump Short Story: When it’s Sunday at the US Open, you pay attention. Moving day was won by Adam Scott, who shot a tournament best 67 to move into a tie for second at -3 and a spot in the final pairing of the day with leader Sam Burns. Burns had a solid day, showing control of his shot and the ability to not shy away from the big moment. JJ Spaun started the round a little rocky, but found his sea legs in the rain and played confident down the stretch. The wild card in all of this is Viktor Hovland, who currently sits 3 shots off the lead. Hovland was even on the day, but showed moments of greatness. Here’s your top give going into today:
Sam Burns: -4
Adam Scott: -3
JJ Spaun: -3
Viktor Hovland: -1
Carlos Ortiz: E
Why it Matters: The weather for today at Oakmont isn’t pretty, we’re going to see some rain. To have a good day and bring the lead into Sunday becomes even more imperative given the chance today’s track is a little sloppy. Adam Scott looks to become the second oldest US Open winner of all time, and Viktor Hovland, JJ Spaun, Sam Burns and others look to win their first career major. In a similar vein, nobody in the Top 20 has ever won at the US Open, so the trophy is likely going to a new home.

🔥 Clark. Is. BACK.
The Stump Short Story: What a return from injury for the WNBA’s biggest star, Caitlin Clark! Her 32 points 9 assists, and 8 rebounds led the Indiana Fever to a win over the previously undefeated New York Liberty and their duo of stars. Clark got the home crowd fired up with her 25 first half points, including a flurry of unbelievable logo threes on back-to-back-to-back possessions. When the Fever have Clark, they may be one of the most dangerous squads in the W.
Why it Matters: The Fever went into yesterday’s game with a 4-5 record, I can’t see them falling under .500 again this season, barring any unforeseen injuries. Clark is the most electric player in the game, but it’s what she provides beyond her scoring that is so pivotal. She’s an elite passer, and a really good rebounder as well. With her on the court, it’s a whole new game. Generational talents do that.
