On This Day…

🏈 On this day in 2012, Denver Broncos QB Tim Tebow hits Demaryius Thomas on an 80-yard touchdown pass on the first play of overtime to win an AFC Wild Card Playoff Game over the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The game would be known as the “3:16 Game”. Tebow inscribed the biblical citation “John 3:16” on his eye black in the NCAA Championship game in 2009. Exactly 3 years later, this game happened. Tebow accumulated 316 passing yards, and averaged 31.6 yards per completion, the Steelers finished the game with a time of 31 minutes and 6 seconds, the ratings peaked with a rating of 31.6, and Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger threw a second-quarter interception on 3rd-and-16.

Today’s Stump Story…

🤯 Chaos in College Basketball

The world of college athletics gets weird at times, and it’s an absolute blessing that we can get this kind of action on a Tuesday night.

(1) Tennessee @ (8) Florida: Some people say that you should save the best for last, but gosh darn it I cannot wait to talk about this one. Heading into the evening there was only ONE unbeaten left in the country, and it just so happened that they were the #1 ranked team in the country. The Volunteers went into the Swamp and wanted to show they were the best in the SEC. Man, they were wrong. The Gators scored the first 12 points of the game and they never really looked back. I mean ever. The Gators put a historic beating on the Volunteers as Tennessee only managed to make four shots in the first 20 minutes and trailed by as much as 36 points late in the second half. An absolutely ugly all-around performance for the #1 team in the country.

(6) Kentucky @ Georgia: It had been 5 years since UGA has beat a top-10 team, and (6) Kentucky was the one to break that streak for Georgia. Led by freshman forward Asa Newell, Georgia pulled away in the second half, never giving up the lead (Also a serious shoutout to BLUE CAIN!). Serious foul trouble for the Wildcats most likely cost them the game with three starters picking up their fourth foul and having to sit for extended periods of time. This led to Georgia outscoring Kentucky at the free throw line 29-15. Will Kentucky drop out of the top 10?

Arizona @ (21) West Virginia: Is Arizona back? They just could be. After losing to West Virginia at home earlier in the season, the Wildcats went to Morgantown looking for revenge. The Wildcats were led by KJ Lewis, who scored a career-high 21 points to lead them to victory. The Mountaineers, who entered the AP Top 25 this week for the first time in two years this past week, will most likely exit the poll after just renting the spot for a short 7 days. The key moment of the game came when West Virginia hit 3-straight three-pointers to cut the game to 5, but Arizona responded with a 12-point run of their own to push the lead to 17.

Quick Hitters

🏈 The Las Vegas Raiders have fired first-year head coach Antonio Pierce, retain general manager Tom Tolesco. Pierce was hired last season as the team’s coach after serving as the interim in 2023, the Raiders went 4-13 this season and currently hold the no. 6 overall pick. Raiders minority owner Tom Brady is expected to be a part of the collaborative effort to select a new hew head coach and staff.

🤝 The San Francisco Giants and veteran right-hander Justin Verlander are in agreement on a one-year, $15 million contract. It feels like a match made in heaven, as the Giants play in the most pitcher-friendly park in the MLB and Verlander is coming off the worst year in his career. Verlander, who is 42, is a three-time Cy Young Award winner but had shoulder and neck injuries in 2024 that limited him to 17 starts.

🏆️ The midseason Wooden Award list came out for men’s and women’s college basketball. The award honors the best players in the country in a given year. Headlining the women’s list is USC’s JuJu Watkins, UConn’s Paige Bueckers, Notre Dame’s Hanna Hidalgo, and UCLA’s Lauren Betts. On the men’s side is Auburn’s Johni Broome, Duke’s Cooper Flagg, Marquette’s Kam Jones, and Kansas’s Hunter Dickinson.
