🖥️ Man vs. Computer

In the battle of man vs computer in chess? Who wins? Well, in this case, computer won.
On this day in 1997, Russia chess grandmaster Garry Kasparov begins his chess match versus IBM supercomputer Deep Blue. The supercomputer would defeat Kasparov in a six game chess match, making it the first time a computer had defeated a reigning world chess champion under tournament conditions.

🤝 Thank You, Pop.

When Basketball Hall of Famer Gregg Popvich announced yesterday that he will no longer coach the San Antonio Spurs and is transitioning to a full-time role as the teams president of basketball ops, a little part of the NBA faded away.
Popovich, 76, began his Spurs career as an assistant coach under Larry Brown in 1988, after a brief stint with the Golden State Warriors, he rejoined the Spurs front office in 1994 and took over as head coach in December of 1996, when, as general manager, he fired then head coach Bob Hill after a 3-15 start and took over on the bench. That very year, San Antonio was awarded this first overall pick and selected Tim Duncan.
Pop is the NBA’s career wins leader with 1,422 regular season victories and guided the team to five NBA championships. Popovich is credited as one of the matriarchs of the Spurs franchise, partnering with Tim Duncan, David Robertson, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili, and Kawhi Leonard.
Pop was the oldest coach in NBA history, and told the team in February of this past season in an emotional message that he would not be able to return to the team as head coach last season.
Other than all of his success on the court, Pop was known as one of the best humans in the NBA. He was a great coach, but an even better leader of men who cared about all aspects of the human experience. Every player who was ever apart of the Spurs franchise was for the better because of Pop.
There has been an absolutely unreal outpouring of emotional messages from people all over the world who not only played for Pop, but respected his work ethic and success. Thank you Gregg Popovich for not only being a great coach, but an even better human that people can look up to.

🏀 Rockets Force a Game Seven!
Just when it seemed like it was over when the Warriors were up 3-1 on Houston, the Rockets dug in and have gone sicko mode.
Last night, it was a tight game all throughout. There were runs for each side, but going into the fourth it was a 2-point lead for Houston. What happened next was inexplicable. The Warriors went cold, and I mean ice cold! They hit their second field goal with 5 minutes to go in the quarter, and the Rockets were cooking. They played a double-big lineup with Sengun as well as Steven Adams (who had 17 points and 5 rebounds), and this combo really forced the Warriors to force some shots.
We now head back to Houston where it’s one game for all the marbles. Houston has been doubted all series, and they have a chance to prove that their 2-seed is legitimate.
🔥 Clemson Basketball Player Joins Football
For the whole basketball season, Clemson football head coach Dabo Swinney joked with Clemson basketball power forward Ian Schieffelin that he would make a great tight end. Turns out that Swinney was not joking, and neither was Schieffelin.
The 6-foot-8 big man posted to his Instagram that he was forgoing any pro basketball prospects for now in favor of one last season in Clemson orange, now he’ll be wearing shoulder pads too. This comes after he got a call from Swinney with a serious offer to spend the next six month with the football program and see what happens. And it looks like he’ll have a serious chance to compete too. Clemson lost their starting TE from the last few years to the NFL, and their depth chart only has 26 total receptions between the rest of the unit right now. The last time Schieffelin played football was in his freshman year of high school, he played quarterback.
👏 Grizzlies hire Tuomas Iisalo
After an extended period serving as the interim head coach of the Memphis Grizzlies, Tuomas IIsalo has officially been named the head coach.
The Finnish coach took over for Taylor Jenkins in late March after Jenkins was removed from his post. He helped the Grizzlies advance out of the play-in tournament before it was swept in the first round by the Oklahoma City Thunder. After his short stint ended following the first round, Iisalo got the vote of confidence from several of the Grizzlies players, including the most important one, Ja Morant. Iisalo played 14 years professionally oversees in Finland, and then turned his sights on coaching. He won the EuroCup and EuroCup Coach of the Year honors in 2024 while leading Paris Basketball before joining the Memphis staff. Congrats to Iisalo, who now has the great honor of leading the Memphis basketball franchise.
