💸 Nets Throw Money at Stars

Ya know, I can’t hate on the Nets for throwing a bunch of money at free agents and hoping it worked. I mean, in terms of big names, they got this one right.

On this day in 2019, the Brooklyn Nets load up on elite NBA talent on the first day of free agency when they sign Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, and DeAndre Jordan (he was a big deal in 2019, lol). Obviously, the lineup didn’t really work out, but it was certainly an exciting time to be a Brooklyn fan.

Glue Guy of the Day

⚽️ A Star is Born in Minnesota

Glue Guy OTD: Matt Freese, Goalkeeper, US Men’s National Team

The United States needed a hero in their Concacaf Gold Cup Quarterfinal match against Costa Rica last night. They found one.

After a shaky first and last 25 minutes of the match, the United States found themselves in a 2-2 draw and were staring down a shootout with all the momentum on Costa Rica’s side. Costa had one of the best goalies the western hemisphere has ever seen, while the United States had a pretty unproven guy, Matthew Freese, manning the net. But every proven player had their “it” moment, and last night was just that for Mr. Freese.

Freese had three different saves in the shootout, a heroic effort that gave the US just the spark it needed to advance to the semifinals. Freese, who plays professionally for New York City FC and is a graduate of Harvard, needed a statement performance to prove he belongs. Team USA knows what they have in their other keeper Matt Turner, but gave Freese a shot to rise to the occasion. Rise, he did. He’s now firmly put himself into contention to be the starter for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Team USA hadn’t shown quite the attitude and fight that many fans were hoping to see in this tournament, but they finally showed some juice last night. They were gritty, and when they were up against a wall, they punched their way out. Three Matthew Freese punches secured their victory.

Wednesday night in St. Louis, Matt Freese will be there. Will you? GLUE.

Weekend Moments

🏀 NBA Contracts Galore

The Stump Short Story: It was a weekend of some BIG signings, we’ll catch you up on all of it.

  • Houston Rockets: Resign Jabari Smith Jr. (5-years, $122M)

  • Milwaukee Bucks: Resign Bobby Portis (3-years, $44M)

  • LA Clippers: Resign James Harden (2-years, $81.5M)

  • Minnesota T’Wolves: Resign Julius Randle (3-years, $100M)

  • Cleveland Cavs: Trade for Lonzo Ball from Bulls

  • Minnesota T’Wolves: Resign Naz Reid (5-years, $125M)

Why it Matters: It’s the time of the NBA offseason where we see who’s staying and who’s leaving, but there’s a lot of teams who are trying to lock down their guys right now before true NBA Free Agency starts. We’ll keep you updated on all of this as the real big stuff starts coming.

⛳️ Rookie Wins Playoff Battle in Detroit

The Stump Short Story: What were you doing when you were 20 years old? Aldrich Potgieter is winning PGA Tour tournaments. He surely earned it. It was an absolute race track, there was a three golfer playoff at 22-under after 72 holes between Chris Kirk, Max Greyserman, and Potgieter. Kirk fell off the playoff after a few holes, but Greysermen and Potgieter kept it rolling. FIVE PLAYOFF HOLES. The 20-year old is a native of South Africa and played on the Korn Ferry Tour before getting his PGA Tour Card. This is his first win at this level.

Why it Matters: Potgieter is the youngest player on tour and when he earned his tour card last year, he was the second youngest player to earn his way onto the top tour through the Korn Ferry. This is the ninth different player to win for the first time this season, a testament to the high level of golf being player up and down the rankings. Aldrich is a rising star in this sport, he drives the ball well and at his age, his only going to get better.

Blazers Cut Ties With Deandre Ayton

The Stump Short Story: The Blazers were really in an interesting spot with their lineup of big men after this draft. A couple stump favorites actually. They seem to be in good hands with Donovan Clingan and now the incoming rookie from China, Yang Hansen. Ayton was costing the most money out of the three, so last night in the wee hours of the night we found out the Blazers were buying out his contract, and that he is now a pending free agent!

Why it Matters: Just a few seasons removed from being in an NBA Finals and being one of the leading contributors, Ayton has struggled with injury and the spotlight. He has missed 69 games over the last two seasons. You might not have heard from him but he was averaging 14 points and 10 rebounds a game. A few teams are in need of big men, we’ll see where he lands. Very excited for the CLING KONG vs Hansen clips to get leaked from practice. What a matchup that will be!
