Post Thanksgiving Reset
Let's recap the world of sports from yesterday...
Stuffing Mac N Cheese Turkey Potatoes. And then corn gravy and more potatoes. Turkey turkey, turkey turkey. Sorry for that gibberish but that’s an accurate depiction of what’s going on in my mind right now. Hope everybody had a great Thanksgiving! There was turkey, and there was football! Today we’ve got an oh-so-rare Friday afternoon NFL game as well as a MONSTER NHL slate! Can we talk about Eberflus for a sec…that play-calling at the end was HORRENDOUS! Let’s Stump!
Today’s Trivia🧠
How many games has the NFL played on a Friday? |
(answer at the bottom of the Stump!)
On This Day…
🏒 On this day in 1924, the Montreal Forum opened in Canada. A historic building located in Cabot Square, often called “the most storied building in hockey history.”
The Canadiens played their last game there on March 11, 1996. The building was renovated in 1999, and is now a movie theater!
Today’s Stump Story…
🏈 Thanksgiving Turkey Bowl: NFL Edition
Football. Turkey. Food coma. An all time football combo. Let’s recap the games from yesterday…
Bears vs Lions: A game that was a big-time snooze fest for the first half and then some, ended with some big-time action. The Lions were up 16-0 at the half, but then all of a sudden the Bears came storming back. It was 23-20 and the Bears were in position to win or tie with under a minute left in the ball game, but some horrendous clock management by Bears head coach Matt Eberflus had other ideas. He failed to use all of his timeouts and just let the clock run, almost like he was trying to lose on purpose. All that comeback for nothing, the Bears lose and the Lions go to 11-1 for the first time in their history.
Giants vs Cowboys: The final score of 27-20 does not tell the trust story of this game. The Cowboys were in firm control of this game from pretty much the beginning. An incredible pick-six by DeMarvion Overshown gave the Cowboys an early second-quarter 13-7 lead and never really looked back. The Giants scored twice in the fourth quarter to make it a one-possession game, but never got the ball back. Ceedee Lamb was pretty much a non-factor as he was experiencing what many think was an aggravation of his AC joint injury that he’s been battling through. A breakout game for Rico Dowdle: 22 carries, 112 yards, and a tuddy, helped push the Cowboys over the top.
Dolphins vs Packers: The nightcap started out as a one-sided affair. The Packers took a 24-3 lead into halftime! Courtesy of 2 Jayden Reed TD’s and a Josh Jacobs score as well. This game on paper was supposed to be a ot more competitive, but it just shows that teams are what their records are. The Packers are 9-3 for a reason, and the Dolphins are 5-7 for a reason. Miami couldn’t seem to get anything going in the cold until late in the game. Jonnu Smith has been an absolute revelation for them as he caught 10 passes for 113 yards. Anybody who got him from the waiver wire is surely smiling ear to ear. The Dolphins scored late, but this was a Green Bay clinic from coast to coast, Packers win, 30-17!
Quick Hitters
🏀 After losing for the first time in a LONG TIME, the South Carolina women’s basketball team responded in a big way. The (4) Gamecocks took on the (15) Iowa State Cyclones and their star Audi Crooks. Iowa State jumped out to an EARLY 3-0 lead. From that point forward, SC went on a 32-0 run, eventually leading 32-3. South Carolina held Iowa State to 23% shooting and 17% from three-point range. It was a masterclass from Dawn Staley and her defending champion Gamecocks on Thanksgiving. SC has not lost consecutive games since 2019, that streak lives on. South Carolina 76, Iowa State 36.
🎾 Five-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek accepted a one-month suspension yesterday after she tested positive for a banned substance. Swiatek failed an out-of-competition drug test in August for the substance trimetazidine, a heart medication commonly known as TMZ. Swiatek, who’s spent most of the last two years as the world number one, will serve her suspension and then return in late December of 2024.
🏀 A couple of basketball royalty programs, (3) Gonzaga and (14) Indiana, took each other on yesterday in the Battle 4 Atlantis. Gonzaga was able to win in a bigggg way behind an incredibly balanced scoring sheet. The Bulldogs were led by three guys who scored over 15 points, and 6 guys who scored more than 11 points. Their leading scorer had 16. The Hoosiers fell short but their key transfer from the offseason, Oumar Ballo, led the way with 25 points. College basketball is more fun when the Indiana Hoosiers are good, but Gonzaga could care less. Zaga 89, Hoosiers 73.

Trivia Answer:
C. 12! The NFL has only played 12 total games on a Friday. Today’s game between the Chiefs and Raiders will be the 13th in history. Why? It’s complicated. But mostly it’s because of TV of the Sports Broadcasting Act of 1964, which says the NFL can’t have games on Fridays or Saturdays between a certain time of the year.
