People Aren’t Talking Enough About…

The Paralympian Who Might End Up In Space

Following a motorcycle accident that caused him to have his right leg amputated at the age of 19, Great Britain athlete John McFall had to start from scratch. He re-taught himself how to run again and became a professional track athlete.

Representing Great Britain in the 2008 Paralympics, McFall won Bronze in the final of the Men’s 100M. He went on to become a trauma and orthopedic surgeon.

In 2022, McFall became the first “parastronaut” at the European Space Agency (ESA), and partook in their study called ‘Fly’. The study looked at the feasibility and assessed the challenges a disabled person may face in space flight.

The study has thus far demonstrated that it would be feasible for someone with a physical disability like McFall could sustain a long mission in space. The remainder of the study will conclude at the end of the year, but the early findings are extremely positive.

The ESA noted in a release to the media that the study saw McFall take on extreme winter and seas training, as well as zero-gravity flights, no show-stoppers have been found yet.

On This Day…

In 2012, the sports world was ROCKED by the news that Lance Armstrong was officially STRIPPED of his 7 Tour de France titles.

Armstrong was found guilty of doping and steroid use, enhancing his performance and evidently leading to his high level of success.

Talking Points

🏈 WILSONNNNNNN

Russell Wilson will start the season at QB for the Pittsburgh Steelers, narrowly defeating Justin Fields. Wilson, who signed a one-year deal with the Steelers this past March, played 25 snaps in the preseason compared to Fields’ 56.

It was a pretty ugly preseason for the Steelers, where it didn’t look like either guy really wanted to take the bull by the horns and win the starting job. Wilson being the veteran with a lot more playing experience and a better resume, always seemed to have a slight edge on Fields.

Both of their former teams, the Bears and Broncos, look poised to move on with their new rookie franchise QBs in Caleb Williams and Bo Nix.

🎾Is Tennis too demanding? Their Stars Think So

It’s nothing new for Tennis stars to outwardly complain about their schedule being too harsh, not having enough time for breaks in between events, and not getting a proper off-season. In 2024, aside from the four Grand Slam tournaments, women must participate in 16 tournaments a year, up from 10 the year prior.

No. 1 ranked woman Iga Swiatek added a complaint this week saying that athletes are not being heard when they express their concerns about managing their physical and mental health while also having to increase the amount the play just to meet the minimum standards. She also added that there is no consultation of the players.

December is supposed to be their off month, but they are often playing in exhibition matches to stay fit because the season starts the last week of December.

⛳️PGA’s Last Hurrah for 2024

An incredible PGA Tour season reaches its conclusion this weekend at East Lake Golf Club and there’s a massive prize on the line: $25 million. Not only does the winner get money, but they will bring home a significant trophy and the title of one of the top golfers of the year.

It works like this: you accumulate points throughout the PGA Tour season through finishing positions in tournaments. The higher you finish, the closer to the top you are. As we get into the playoffs, the top 70 make the first tournament, then the top 50 the week after, and finally 30 head into the last weekend.

The caveat in the last tournament is the #1 in the PGA ranking starts at -10, #2 starts at -8, and so on until #30 at even par. It’s a benefit for good play throughout the year.

The order goes like this: Scottie (-10), Schauffele (-8), Matsuyama (-7), Bradley (-6), Aberg (-5), and Burns, Rory, Morikawa, Clark, and Cantlay at (-4).

“Thursday is basically Friday, but the junior version.”

Workaholics

A lot of 9-5ers will say this, and it’s true, I suppose. I’d argue it’s just a way for them to cut out of work a little early.

Trivia Answer:

E. Victor Hovland! In fact, Victor RAN AWAY with this one, finishing a whopping -27, which happened to be 5 better than the second-place finisher, and 11 better than the third-place finisher! Victor was unconscious!
