Pandemonium in College Hoops!
College Basketball may have the greatest Stumpset culture in all of sports!
Yeah, we absolutely just used the word PANDEMONIUM in our title today. It just felt right! Unreal day in college hoops where every time you blinked there was another Stumpset! On top of the Stumpsets Iowa might have to build a statue for Josh Dix after he hit THIS insane game-winner! Big day in College Football as well as the latest bracket came out! Let’s do this thing!
Today’s Trivia🧠
Which international brand is the main sponsor of this years NBA Cup? |
(answer at the bottom of the Stump!)
On This Day…
⚾️ On this day in 2011, MLB legend Pedro Martinez officially retired from professional baseball.
Martinez was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2015. He had 3 Cy Youngs, 8 All-Stars, and was the star pitcher for the Boston Red Sox when they won their 2004 World Series. Not only was he a great pitcher, but he was an absolutely legendary personality.
Today’s Stump Story…
🏀 A Night Of STUMPSETS!
The world of sports was a little quiet last night, so some college basketball underdogs made sure to make some NOISE!
Clemson Tigers STUMPSET (4) Kentucky: Clemson has been on the come up in basketball these last few years, but even this is a huge upset. Kentucky came into the game still undefeated, sitting with a record of 7-0. Clemson, who had nobody score more than 15 points, leaned on some really impressive defense and high-energy to drown the Wildcats. Kentucky got almost no help from their bench, which was only able to muster a combined 7 points. Shoutout Brad Brownell, he’s really turned around this Clemson program.
Michigan Wolverines STUMPSET (11) Wisconsin: The Badgers have been off to a HOT start this year and impressing the country, but it was just not enough to defeat the Wolverines. Michigan went TO Madison, WI, and ended the dreams of an undefeated season for the Badgers. Vladi Goldin, who you may or may not remember from those FAU teams of the last few years, starred for the Wolverines. Vladi dropped 24 points to go along with 5 rebounds.
Villanova Wildcats STUMPSET (14) Cincinnati: It wasn’t long ago where Villanova was winning national championships pretty much every other year. The Wildcats have taken a little bit of a dip in success since the retirement of their legendary head coach Jay Wright retired out of nowhere. Kyle Neptune, the man who replaced Wright, gets his first signature win of the 2024-25 campaign as they take down the 14th ranked Bearcats.
Quick Hitters
🏈 The latest College Football Playoff Bracket was released last night, here’s what it looks like:
First Round Matchups: (12) Arizona State vs (5) Penn State, (9) Tennessee vs (8) Ohio State, (11) Alabama vs (6) Notre Dame, (10) Indiana vs (7) Georgia
First Round Bye: (4) Boise State, (3) SMU, (2) Texas, (1) Oregon
First Teams Out: (13) Miami U, (14) Ole Miss
💸 The Juan Soto sweepstakes is apparently wrapping up and the decision should be coming in the next few weeks. All signs are pointing to his deal reaching unprecedented levels never before seen in the MLB, the deal could exceed $600 million and span 15 years. The finalists seem to be both of New York’s franchises, Mets and Yankees, the Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox, and Los Angeles Dodgers.
🏀 From the NBA: The Mavericks completed a 15-point 4th Quarter comeback versus the Grizzlies and went on to win, 121-116! The Bucks won their seventh straight last night, 128-107 over the Pistons. Brandon Miller continues to impress for the Hornets, dropped 34 in their loss.
🏈 After just one season running the offense at the University of Michigan, offensive coordinator Kirk Campbell has been relieved from his duties. Michigan will turn to tight ends coach Steve Casula as their offensive coordinator for their bowl game, and head coach Sherrone Moore will begin his search for a new play caller in the meantime.
