STUMP STORY OF THE DAY✍️

The Open: History and Importance

The British Open is a landmark golf tournament in the ‘home of golf’.. let’s take a quick look at the history and why this tournament means so much.

Royal Troon Golf Club

The modern game of golf is widely believed to have originated in Scotland during the tail end of the Middle Ages. The earliest known mention of golf is in a 13th-century manuscript that depicts a game with clubs and a ball. The word ‘golf’ itself is thought to be a Scottish variation of the Dutch word colf, which means ‘club’, ‘stick’, or ‘bat’.

The Open, often referred to as the British Open or the Open Championship, is the oldest of all four major tournaments in professional golf. The tournament was first played on October 17th, 1860, at Prestwich Golf Club in Scotland. The Open is also the only major professional tournament sanctioned by the PGA Tour that is not played in the United States.

It is always played on the weekend of the third Friday in July, and each winner since 1873 has received the legendary Claret Jug, golfs oldest prize. It was first presented in 1873 to winner Tom Kidd. The original trophy was taken out of circulation in 1927 and now is displayed in a museum.

14 different courses have hosted The Open, this year it’ll take place at Royal Troon Golf Club in Troon, Scotland. Not only is it the most historic and oldest tournament, it is also one of the most fun to watch.

Golf in this part of the world is played on a links course, which refers to a course on an area of coastal dunes and few, if any, trees or in land water hazards. The fairways are long and thin and high winds typically whip golf balls around. This is the way the first humans played golf, so there’s some level of human vs nature.

This tournament means so much to the players as it’s a way of respecting and honoring the long history of golf and where it was born. This is like playing lacrosse with the Native people of America, or even playing squash with the brits.

This year will be the 152nd edition of The Open, and there will surely be no shortage of fireworks on the course. All the big boys will be there to compete, and many of them took the last week or two off to truly lock in and dial their game to the right level before making the jump across the pond.

The defending champion is American Brian Harman, who put on a masterclass performance in some pretty poor weather last year to lift the Claret Jug and become what is referred to as “The Champion Golfer of the Year”. Mr. Harman will have to return the jug before he gets off the box tomorrow, but man would he love to get it back!

Quote of the Day

“As a past champion. I’m exempt until I’m 60. Colin’s not.”

Tiger Woods

Talk about poking the bear. Or should we say Tiger? Some chap named Colin Montgomerie said Tiger should hang it up and Tiger calmly responded with this gem.

Song of the Day

Little Talks

Of Monsters and Men

It’s Thursday. We’ve got THE OPEN. Roll the windows down and listen to some Little Talks. Great tune!

Glue Guy of the Day

Defined: Glue Guy (Noun, Verb, Adj., etc.) - a person, thing, idea, or thought that holds together the larger group. Not the star, not the main character, but a hard hat and lunch pale type who knows its role. The GLUE of the group.

Double Side Tape

Does a lot for you.. an absolute next-level addition to the sticky things category. Really didn’t know this existed until about a year ago but man does it ever change the game. Is it cheating because it has a little bit of a sticky glue on it? I don’t think so.
