What Caught Our Eye👀

STUMP STORY OF THE DAY✍️

The “Highest-Paid Quarterback” Problem: What the Heck is Going On

A deep dive into what it really means to be the highest paid QB in the NFL, and why something needs to change…

We had two massive deals yesterday in the QB market, the Dolphins extended their guy, Tua Tagovailoa, to a 4-year, $212 million contract, a team record. While the Green Bay Packers signed their QB, Jordan Love, to a 4-year, $220 million contract extension. That contract made Jordan Love the highest paid quarterback in NFL history.

The term “highest-paid player in NFL history” seems like something we hear every few weeks. At least every year. And it kind of pisses me off. Yes, Jordan Love is now the highest paid QB of all time, but his average per year isn’t. His $55 million per year matched the deals Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence and Bengals QB Joe Burrow signed. The guaranteed money and signing bonus may be different, sure. But lets not overuse the term.

Furthermore, every single year there is a new highest paid played in NFL history. There always will be under the current model of the NFL. Every year when the pay roll increases, the numbers change, and so do the contracts. So next year someone else will get to hold the honor of the highest paid contract in NFL history, or at least for a few months.

Where it gets even more irritating is when you look at the list of highest paid QBs in the NFL, something is a little off.

  1. Jordan Love

  2. Trevor Lawrence

  3. Joe Burrow

  4. Tua Tagovailoa

  5. Jared Goff

  6. Justin Herbert

  7. Lamar Jackson

  8. Jalen Hurts

  9. Kyler Murray

  10. Deshaun Watson

You have to go to NUMBER 12 to even get a QB who has won a super bowl. Patrick Mahomes makes $45 million a year. So what does this list tell you?

The QB market is so overcompensated. Guys who haven’t proven they can win, let alone get to the playoffs and be successful, are at the top of this list. I love Justin Herbert and Kyler Murray as much as the next guy, and I understand the shortcomings of the team around them, but for them to be top 10 on this list is crazy to me.

The way I see it, you don’t even have to win anymore to make a lot of money as a QB, you just have to trick someone into thinking you can win.

Beyond this, the NFL has a “highest-paid” player problem. They need to figure it out. The second Dak Prescott signs a deal with the Cowboys he’ll be the highest paid player. It doesn’t stop. It’s a never ending cycle.

I’m just some guy talking about this, I have no clue how it could get fixed. But I know this, I’m annoyed and I wanted to say something! That’s what this is for, right?

Song of the Day

Out On The Weekend

Neil Young

Well. It’s the weekend, so we’re going Neil Young today. Slow song but man he’s got a mean harmonica solo!

Glue Guy of the Day

Defined: Glue Guy (Noun, Verb, Adj., etc.) - a person, thing, idea, or thought that holds together the larger group. Not the star, not the main character, but a hard hat and lunch pale type who knows its role. The GLUE of the group.

The Plastic Straw!

The good ol’ reliable.

An absolute detriment to our environment, yes. But you’ll miss these bad boys when your paper straw starts to melt in your mouth after four sips.
