Olympic Opening Ceremonies: But Only The Most Electric Moments

Letā€™s take a look at some of the most electric moments from the opening ceremonies of the Olympics over the yearsā€¦

Muhammad Ali (1996 Olympics, Atlanta, GA)

In honor of what looks to be an amazing opening ceremony on the Seine River in Paris, France overlooking the Eiffel Tower, weā€™re taking a look back at some of the coolest moments from opening ceremonies from throughout the years.

Los Angeles, California, USA, 1984

Held at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, there was no doubt that the city of stars was going to put on a memorable spectacle. There was plenty of jaws on the floor when ā€œRocketmanā€ Bill Suitor came cruising into the stadium. Not only did he cruise in, he flew in, using a Bell Rocket Belt, a hydrogen peroxide-fueled jet pack. Iā€™ll tell ya what, that would fire me the hell up. Talk about futuristic, this wouldā€™ve blown my mind in 1984!

Beijing, China, 2008

2,008 humans, playing one instrument, at the same time, in perfect synchronicity. Beyond this, the case was north of 14,000 people and had a reported budget of $100 million dollars. Oh, and the instrument they played, wasnā€™t just the drums or guitar, it was the fou. Never heard of it? Thatā€™s cause itā€™s a badass ancient Chinese percussion instrument. Itā€™ll knock your socks off.

London, England, UK, 2012

Letā€™s start off with the fact that this whole thing was orchestrated by Danny Boyle, the Oscar-winning director of Slumdog Millionaire. The four-hour ceremony was an absolute rollercoaster, including massive puppets of Captain Hook, Rowan Atkinson playing chariots of fire (the guy who plays Mr. Bean), and of course, James Bond. Well, so we thought. Daniel Craig and Queen Elizabeth II were shown in a helicopter, then all of a sudden, the two were skydiving into the stadium. Unfortunately, the two of them really werenā€™t skydiving. But man it was cool while it lasted.

Atlanta, Georgia, USA, 1996

This one really gets me. Itā€™s none other than the GOAT, Muhammad Ali. Visibly struggling with parkinsonā€™s disease, the Gold Medal Winning Ali took the final few steps to light the flame and mark the official beginning of the 1996 edition of the Olympics. Beyond him, legends like James Earl Jones, Celine Dion, and other joined in on what was an absolutely mesmerizing performance. Nothing like seeing the man himself, Darth Vader, reading a few quotes.

While this is just a short list of some of my personal favorites, there has been so many amazing tributes over the years. Please take some time to watch the ceremony tonight, take in the French culture, and get ready to root on the best athletes in the world.

TRIVIA ANSWER

A. 82-80. The 2005 Padres made the playoffs and got swept in the first round after winning their division. No other team in the NL West had more than 77 wins. Despite their above .500 record, this Padres team was pretty bad, and did not deserve to be a playoff team.
