On This Day
🏈 Football Meets Footy

The European expansion of the NFL has long been a dream of top executives of the league, and it all started with this one game.
On this day in 1983, the first NFL exhibition game in Europe took place in London’s Wembley Stadium between the Minnesota Vikings and St. Louis Cardinals. While it was just an exhibition preseason game, it was still a big moment in the leagues history. This evolved into the NFL’s international series, which now takes place every season and began in 2007.

⚾️ First Career Save Amidst Cancer Treatment! Nic Enright!

The wins, the losees, and everything in between is great. But it’s moments like we saw on August 4th and the story behind it that truly makes sports special! Let’s talk Nic Enright!
There’s a 28-year old rookie catcher over there in Cleveland who just got his first career save on Monday night. It was a 7-6 win against the Mets and it was Enright who came in to close the deal. Clutch.
Well, the story seems rather bland right? Here’s some paprika for you.
In 2022 the then 25 year old was diagnosed with cancer (Hodgkin lymphoma).
Enright was drafted in 2022, he played his college ball at Virginia Tech, and just 19 days after the happiest day of his life, he was diagnosed. He began immunotherapy treatments in 2023, and amidst that was in a bit of limbo with his MLB status. He was rostered by the Miami Marlins minor league system, got released, and then joined Cleveland in hopes of getting towards an MLB career.
He turned things around in 2024 in Cleveland’s minor league system, when he was the owner of a ridiculous 1.06 ERA.
He got the call up to the big leagues just a few months ago and has appeared in 19 games and has a 2.01 ERA. Monday however was a big one, it was his first career save. A guy who’s life changed forever twice in the span of 19 days just a few years ago, persevered through uncertainty and adversity and went one day at a time!
One of the great stories you’ll hear all year! He is continuing to go through his treatment and is scheduled to have his final one in November of this year!
If he can fight through cancer and earn a Save in the world’s highest level of professional baseball, we can all accomplish whatever little task we’ve been overthinking this week! Let’s go! Let’s knock something off the list!
Nic Enright, and his PERSEVERANCE. GLUE!
The BIG Moments

⚾️ Yankees Going From Bad to Worse
The Stump Short Story: This team was one of the odds on favorites to win the whole damn thing heading into the season, and even a few months in. But things have gotten from weird, to bad, to worse very quickly. The boys are just inventing new ways to lose. They are amidst a 5 game L streak and things couldn’t be bleaker. Offseason acquisition Devin Williams (Closer) was supposed to be a sure fire stud to round out the bullpen, boy oh boy has he been anything but! He’s giving up as many runs this year as he had the previous three seasons combined! INSANITY! Fans seem to be at a boiling point with Aaron Boone continuing to make weird decisions at this point in the season.
Why it Matters: The Yankees are now in the final wild card spot in the AL just a half game ahead of the Rangers. A loss today against those Rangers could have the Yankees on the outside looking. Just a wild turn of events for a team that really looked like they had a chance. We’ll see what happens but they need Judge back to help pump some electricity through the lineup and they NEED HIM BAD!

⚡️ Chargers Reunite with Keenan Allen
The Stump Short Story: If anybody else has been poking around fantasy draft boards and seeing where Keenan Allen has been going, woah! He was a Free Agent after his stint with the Bears and it seemed like it was only a matter of time before he found a new home. Well, he didn’t…he found an old one! Keenan is going from Chicago back to LA to be a Charger. It feels right doesn’t it? He was relatively quiet on teh Bears, but for some reason this move feels that although old, he might go back to being an absolute problem wearing the blue and yellow. Especially now that Ladd McConkey has shown how much juice he really has!
Why it Matters: Anytime there’s a move like this there’s a ton of things to keep an eye on. One, as we get into fantasy football very soon, this is a it of a round changer. Anybody who already had their draft and got this guy late is celebrating big time right now! The Chargers under Jim Harbaugh in Year 1 really turned things around from where they were just two years ago, they will be an interesting team to keep an eye on and look to try and win double-digit games and take the division! Easier said than done.
