On This Day…

⛵️ On this day in 1866, the first yacht race across the Atlantic Ocean finished when the schooner “Henrietta”, owned by Gordon Bennett of New York, reached Bishop Rock in the Scilly Isles.

The race took off from New York and it took the Henriette 13-plus days to get to the Isles. Woof. Now that’s commitment!

🏈 NFL Sunday Roundup: Week 16

There was a TON of really good action yesterday in the NFL, so much so, that if you blinked you may have missed something. So let us take care of it for you…

🔥Penix ALMOST Perfect in his NFL debut: The Falcons don’t need Michael Penix Jr. to be perfect to win, they just need him to keep the offense on the field. Despite a late first-half interception, thanks to Kyle Pitts bobbling a ball near the goal line. The Falcons were much better on third down than on previous weeks, and the run game took off with Penix under center. The Falcons still have a shot at the playoffs, and Penix may be the guy to get them there.

💪 Daniels Comes Up Clutch Again: Washington’s star rookie QB Jayden Daniels once again shined when the Commanders needed it most. The Commanders took possession with less than 2 minutes in the game trailing by five and 57 yards to go. No stress for Jayden Daniels. He hit Jamison Crowder for a 9-yard TD with 6 seconds remaining to defeat an Eagles team that had won ten straight games. With one more win, the Commanders can clinch a playoff spot, they play the Falcons next.

💯 Nothing Can Stop the Detroit Lions: This whole team could get hurt and I still think they could win a ball game. Dan Campbell just gets his guys ready to play a football game. Not like the Bears are world beaters, but it was just the way Lions won. They can do it through the air, on the ground, with defense, with offense, it doesn’t matter. Just put the football down.

Two Teams Eliminated from the Playoffs: If you told me at the beginning of the year that the San Francisco 49ers and the Dallas Cowboys would not only miss out on the playoffs, but be eliminated in Week 16, I would’ve said that you’re crazy. Yes, injuries have played a massive role in this for both teams. But injuries haven’t stopped some teams (Hint, Detroit). I can sit here and say these teams were just unlucky, and maybe I’d be right. But something feels off with these teams, both of them. Is Purdy the answer? Do the Cowboys have enough?

Quick Hitters

🏀 The Oklahoma Thunder and guard Alex Caruso reached a 4-year, $81 million contract extension yesterday. The deal keeps Caruso, who is under contract for $9.9 million from a deal he signed this offseason. A two-time NBA All-Defensive Team selection, Caruso spent 4 years with the Los Angeles Lakers and 3 with the Chicago Bulls prior to his arrival in OKC.

🏈 New UNC Head Coach, Bill Belichick, has officially brought his son Steve to North Carolina. Steve spent multiple years as the Defensive Coordinator in New England, and held the same position for the University of Washington last season. This comes as no surprise, as it was a foregone conclusion that the two would join forces again. He will be the assistant head coach and Defensive Coordinator.

⛳️ In the world of golf, nothing is better than getting to play with as a parent-child duo. That’s exactly what happens at the PNC Championship this past weekend. Golf’s most famous father-son, Tiger and Charlie Woods, went into the last day tied for the lead. The two got off to a hot start, as Charlie Woods knocked in a hole-in-one. In the end, the Woods’ went to a playoff with Bernhard and his son, Jason Langer. The Langer’s had a chance to win on the 18th hole, but couldn’t knock in the eagle putt. They didn’t make the same mistake in the playoff, beating the Woods duo.

🏐 Following up on yesterdays unbelievable story, the Penn State Women’s Volleyball program has won the National Championship. Led by head coach Katie Schumacher-Cawley, who was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer in September, became the first women head coach to win the national championship since the NCAA tournament began in 1981.

Trivia Answer:

A. Reggie White! The hall of famer reached 100 sacks in just 96 games. For us non-match folks, that’s more than one a game on average! Myles Garrett became the fourth fastest in NFL history to do it yesterday, in his 115th career game.
