On This Day…

🥊 On this day in 1969, Oscar Brown Jr’s musical “Buck White”, starring Muhammad Ali, opens at George Abbott Theatre in NYC.

The show would run for 7 performances in five days. Ali would go on to perform his key act, “We Came in Chains”, on the Ed Sullivan Show.

🏈 NFL Recap: Week 13

We’re gonna do this like Scott Hanson and break it down by windows…

Early Window: The early window was highlighted by some sneaky really good games. The Bengals and Steelers had the opposite of a typical AFC North clash, a high-scoring offensive battle, leaving the Bengals without any hope of making the playoffs. Steelers 44, Bengals 32. The Vikings and Cardinals went wire-to-wire, with a late-game Aaron Jones TD followed by a Kyler Murray interception proving to be enough for the Vikings to win their fifth straight. Vikings 23, Cardinals 22. The Seahawks, and more importantly, Geno Smith, got their revenge against Aaron Rodgers and the Jets. Not only ruining the Jets’ postseason hopes, but keeping the Seahawks alive. Seahawks 26, Jets 21. The Patriots and Colts had an all-timer, as Anthony Richardson led a 19-play, 80-yard drive capped off by a short touchdown run and 2-point conversion to take the lead and seal the victory. Colts 25, Patriots 24. Oh, and by the way, Jayden Daniels once again showed why he should be the Rookie of the Year. Commanders 42, Titans 19.

Late Window: To start off the late window, the Rams and Saints really gave all of us at home a snoozefest. It was anything but easy for either team, but the Rams were able to grind in out in the end thanks to some timely passes by Matthew Stafford and Kyren Williams hard-nosed runs. Rams 21, Saints 14. The Buccaneers and Panthers had an OT-thriller in Charlotte. Bryce Young and Panthers continue to impress and grow together as Young hit WR Adam Thielan with 30 seconds left to go up 3. Mayfield and the Bucs charged down the field and converted a field goal to force OT, eventually hitting another field goal in OT to leave Carolina winners. Buccaneers 26, Panthers 23. The big game of the late window was between two of the leagues best in the Ravens and Eagles. Both teams are known for their offensive firepower, but ended up in a defensive slug fest. In the end, the run game of the Eagles proved to be too much for the Ravens, even in Baltimore. Eagles 24, Ravens 19.

Sunday Night Football: You Already SHNOWWW! A good old fashioned SNOW BOWL! Man it was quite a state in upstate New York. The forecast called for no snow during the game, but flurries didn’t stop for a second. It was all Buffalo, from start to finish! Josh Allen became the first player ever to record a Passing TD, Receiving TD, and Rushing TD in the same game! If you haven’t seen ‘the play’ yet! Here is it! Insane! Buffalo 25, 49ers 10!

Quick Hitters

🏈 New AP Top 25 dropped yesterday and some big name teams fell HARD! Ohio State, after their massive upset loss to the Michigan Wolverines, fell from (2) all the way down to (7). Miami Florida not only lost a chance to play in the ACC Championship, but also in the College Football Playoff. The Hurricanes went from (6) to (14). Clemson, who will play in the ACC Championship, fell from (12) to (18) after their lost to South Carolina. The Gamecocks earned a three spot promotion, (15) to (12). Syracuse entered the top 25, (23), for the first time since October. Memphis entered the rankings at (25). Texas A&M and Tulane both fell out of the rankings.

💸 An update to yesterdays story regarding the melee’s across college football: Ohio State and Michigan were both fined $100k by the Big Ten conference for violating the league’s sportsmanship policy. This is the first domino to fall regarding the postgame fights this past rivalry weekend. The Big Ten said no further suspensions and/or fines will be released and the case is closed. It will be interesting to see if any of the other conferences that had teams take part in postgame melee’s will follow a similar path.

🏈 West Virginia and their head coach, Neal Brown, have parted ways after six seasons. WVU got BLOWN out in their regular season finale on Saturday versus Texas Tech, putting the Mountaineers at 6-6 to end the year. Brown was coming off of his best season (9 wins) and a new contract extension. As the season went on it seemed like the writing was on the wall that this may be his last trip down the country roads. He’ll be owed $9.775 million for the final three years of his contract. Watch out for former Texas A&M head ball coach Jimbo Fisher to be in the mix.

🏀 Battles of the best in the NBA last night. The Cavs and Celtics tipped off last night, each sitting at one and two respectively in the Eastern Conference. The two faced off less than two weeks ago, with Boston putting on an offensive clinic against an injured Cavs team. Last night, the Cavs were able to get a home win against a Jaylen Brown-less Celtics team, 115-111. In the Western Conference, the one and two seeded teams faced off as well, the Thunder (1) and the Rockets (2). The Rockets have been the surprise of the Western Conference, and they continued to impress last night. Led by 38 points by Fred VanVleet and Alpheren Sengun, the Rockets clawed back from a second half deficit to win at home, 119-116.
