On this day in 1964…
The first Tim Horton’s is opened in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada by its NHL namesake and founder, Tim Horton! Horton played 24 years in the NHL, but I’d guess he’s more known for his coffee and donuts.
Horton died 10 years after the opening of his first shop. Today, there are 5,701 Tim Horton’s across 13 countries. The legacy lives on!

The Mark Messier Trophy is Chosen By… Mark Messier???
In sports there are a variety of “selection committees” that we like to blame for our players or teams not being chosen for their respective postseason or awards. Typically, we don’t really have a certain someone to blame, or someone to yell out. There are also hundreds of trophies in professional sports that are named after all time greats like Davey O’Brien, Michael Jordan Trophy, Cy Young, and others.
In the NHL, they give out the Mark Messier Award to the to an individual as a superior leader within their sport, and as a contributing member of society. However, the Mark Messier Award is not selected by a committee or a media vote. It’s selected by one man: Mark Messier.
How electric is that? Mark Messier, one of the greatest hockey players of all time and all around great dude, selects the winner to his own award. Can you imagine how this would go over in other leagues? Imagine if MJ just showed up and picked the NBA MVP every year? Or if Walter Payton himself used to select the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award in the NFL?
Messier solicits suggestions from teams and league personnel to put together a list of potential candidates. The selection of the finalists and eventual winner however, is Messier’s selection alone.
I would like to take a quick second to emphasize something: this IS a real award. I am not making this up.
This past week, New York Rangers defenseman and team captain Jacob Trouba was named the winner of the honor for the 2023-2024 season. To nobody’s surprise, Trouba was the unanimous selection, receiving 100% of the votes. 1/1.
Trouba was quoted talking to Mark Messier, “One of the first things I did when I was named captain was read your book”. I’ll tell ya what folks, that type of leadership is how you win the Mark Messier Award for Leadership, presented by Mark Messier!
