Miles Russell: 16 Year-Old Phenom

Tell me what you were doing at 16? Well this cat, he's playing on the PGA Tour...

We’re going to start with Miles Russell, a golfer who might just catch the sport on fire, but we aren’t just going to stop there. We’ll talk the red hot Cleveland Cavs, the health status of legendary NBA coach Gregg Popovich, the Colts and their QB situation, and the best team in the NHL right now: the Winnipeg Jets. Let’s start this Thursday off the right way, with the Daily Stump!

On This Day…

🏈 On this day in 1993, Don Shula became the winningest coach in NFL history when he passed the great George Halas.

Shula, in total, won 328 games in his career, 10 more than Halas. His career winning percentage is .677 (328-156-6). The two coaches who are closest to Halas and Shula are Bill Belichick (302), and Andy Reid (267). Will Belichick be able to catch Shula and get another job in the league? Can Andy break 300 before he retires?

Today’s Stump Story…

⛳️ Miles Russell: Back in Action

We’re missing golf, so we’re talking golf today. The Bermuda Championship gets rolling today, and everyone’s favorite 16-year-old phenom is teeing it up once again.

Flashback to July and the Rocket Mortgage Classic, at the time, Miles Russell was only 15 years old. He was living out a dream and competing in his first PGA Tour sanctioned event after earning a sponsor’s exemption. That day, he became one of the youngest golfers to compete in a PGA event in the history of the sport.

Now, the Jacksonville Beach, Florida native is a wise 16 years of age. He’ll tee it up for his second career PGA start this week at the Bermuda Championship at the Port Royale Golf Club in, you guessed it, Bermuda.

He’s looking to show his progression in the last few months, as he failed to make the cut after posting a two-day score of even par at the Rocket Mortgage. There, Russell shot out of the gates on the second day, scoring a -3 on the front nine. At the end of his second round, he managed to finish -2. An impressive feet for someone his age, or of any age, for that matter.

He initially shot onto the scene in April of 2024, when he became the youngest player ever to make the cut on the Korn Ferry Tour at the LECOM Suncoast Classic in Lakewood Ranch, FL. Not only did he make the cut, he managed to finish T20.

He currently sits as the #1 ranked junior in the world and the #69 ranked amateur. I can’t sit here and explain in simple terms how insane this is. He is 16, folks! I was lucky to wake up on time for breakfast when I was 16.

We’ll keep you all updated on how he performs this week down in Bermuda!

Yesterday, In a Nutshell

🏀 CAVS TRACKER! Everyone’s favorite NBA squad, the Cleveland Cavaliers, advanced to 13-0 on the season with their 114-106 win over the Philadelphia 76ers bench squad. The Sixers played without Joel Embiid, Paul George, Tyrese Maxey, and Andre Drummond. The Cavs, however, played with full strength. Donavon Mitchell and Darius Garland LIT UP the fourth quarter and carried the Cavs to victory. Mitchell ended one assist shy of his first career triple-double, while Garland led Cleveland with 25 points.

🏈 Two games after making a shocking change at quarterback, the Indianapolis Colts have given the keys back to their former first round pick, Anthony Richardson. The Colts mentioned that they needed Richardson to take bigger command of his weekly preparation for games, including taking care of his body and watching more film. Richardson also caught flack for taking himself out of a game for being “out of breath”. Let’s see if the Colts and Richardson can turn the page this week as they prepare for the struggling New York Jets.

🏀 A few weeks ago we reported on Spurs head coach and the winningest coach in NBA history, Gregg Popovich, being out for some time with an undisclosed injury. The Spurs announced yesterday that Popovich sustained a “mild stroke”. A timeline for his return has not been determined, but it’s safe to say that we all are hopeful for good health. Mitch Johnson, the Spurs acting head coach, will continue to serve in the role throughout his absence. Take your time coming back, Pop, this one is bigger than basketball!

🏒 The Winnipeg Jets have quietly been having the best start to a season in NHL history. The Jets are 15-1, and with Tuesday night’s win over the New York Rangers, the Jets became the first team in the history of the league to win 15 of it’s first 16 games. Winnipeg is coming off a 2023-24 campaign that tied a franchise record with 52 wins and 110 points. Since the franchise relocated from Atlanta ahead of the 2011-12 season, the Jets have only finished with a sub-.500 record just once.

YEARNIN! I honestly chose this because I wanted to use the word Yearnin. However, it is also a good tune.

Never thought of it that way, but Mr. Hope has a point. Are banks… not cool?

Trivia Answer:

E. None of the above! Threw you a bone, but couldn’t make it that easy for ya! The winningest coach in NFL history is Don Shula. He won 71 games in 7 seasons with the Baltimore Colts before winning 257 in 26 years with the Miami Dolphins!
