STUMP STORY OF THE DAY✍️

Big Bobby MacIntyre: A Relentless Champion

Through ups and downs in his first year on the PGA Tour, the Scottish golfer has finally won his first event, and it was done with someone special right by his side.

There may not be another golfer who talks so little about golf in his interviews. This may seem odd or maybe even annoying for some, but for us, it’s refreshingly honest and candid. Robert MacIntyre, or Bobby, spent this past weekend with his dad. It just so happened that they were playing the RBC Canadian Open, but they were doing it together.

With his father Dougie as his caddie, Bobby won his first PGA Tour Event in his rookie season after 45 attempts. It was an extremely emotional scene on the 18th green after the winning putt was sunk (which you can watch, linked in our Core Four section below), but to understand the story behind the tears, you have to go back in time a little bit.

MacIntyre moved from Europe to Orlando this year to prepare for life as a full-time member of the PGA Tour. MacIntyre was one of 10 golfers from the DP World Tour in Europe to score enough points to earn his way onto the PGA Tour. Where the prize purses are typically around five times larger. It is the logical and typical move for golfers who hope to become the best in the business. But for Bobby, the logical became almost impossible.

Throughout interviews this year, MacIntyre has been quite candid about his loneliness. He misses his DP World Tour friends, he misses his family, and he just missed the familiarity of home. When trips home to Scotland in between tournaments became a little less convenient and less frequent, his game began to struggle along with his mental health.

When he did not get an invite to the Masters tournament in April, Bobby finally got to go home. He took three weeks off from the tour and headed to Oban, Scotland. He barely touched his clubs and he described his trip home to the media as “some stupid stuff and just enjoyed myself.”

During PGA Championship week, he flew his mother out to their Airbnb and it made the place feel a little more like home. The result? A top-10 finish. So while Bobby’s caddie situation has been anything but stable this season, he had always went with some pro. This week, he got even closer to home, and called up his pops, Dougie, to carry his bag.

Dougie has been a greenskeeper for his whole career at a golf course in the southwest corner of Caledonia called Glencruitten Golf Club. He’s never caddied, leaving his career record at 1-0, “I’m a grass-cutter. Not a caddie. Not a caddie. Honestly, it’s unbelievable.” I don’t think there’s really a word to describe the feeling Dougie and Boobby must’ve had walking off the 18th green with the flag from the pin rolled up in Dougie’s hand.

While many golfers often find their big win at the end of searching endlessly and experiencing heartbreak after heartbreak, Bobby’s story is a little different. Different, but fitting. For a player who misses home, it’s almost logical that his big win would come at a time when he missed the cut the week before and needed to make a call to the place he missed most, home, to find his caddie. It makes perfect sense that he’d play so well with his family so close, and with his father walking by his side. Bobby and Dougie, who have given so much to the game of golf, and are from the home of golf, were given their thank you from the gold gods this past weekend.

In the most Bobby MacIntyre interview of all time, he was asked whether he'll play in the upcoming tournaments now that he’s qualified. His response: “I think me and my girlfriend might go back home on Monday as well and just have a helluva party back home, because this is incredible.”

Whether Bobby heads home today or not, there’s a celebration in Scotland today, and there will be another when he returns to Oban.

Song of the Day

Fast Car

Tracy Chapman

Great song that was brought back into the fold for the younger generation when Luke Combs did a cover of it that blew up. There’s just like the original, though.

Glue Guy of the Day

Defined: Glue Guy (Noun, Verb, Adj., etc.) - a person, thing, idea, or thought that holds together the larger group. Not the star, not the main character, but a hard hat and lunch pale type who knows its role. The GLUE of the group.

Racing Pit Crew

The whole gosh dang CREW. Not just one guy, these dudes are trained KILLERS. They have less than 10 seconds to be perfect, and anything less ins unacceptable. The GLUE of a racing team, and I’m not sure anyone else is close.

Despite falling to Kansas State in their second game of the night, the Redhawks defeated (5) Arkansas early in the day to knock the host school out.

The best story in college baseball lives on the day after their school closes for good. After losing on Friday, the Panthers came back to win today with a two-run walk off homer, 9-7 final!

Paul Emerson

Paul went to Day 4 of the RBC Canadien Open as a spectator, but after C.T. Pan’s caddie Mike “Fluff” Cowan slipped and was injured, Emerson asked Pan if he needed help with his bag and became his caddie for the rest of the round! How about that!
