Stump Story of the Day

🏈 SNF Showdown! The trade that worked!

Yesterday was the latest installment of Matthew Stafford and Jared Goff both playing against their former teams. Sunday Night Football was a rematch from last year’s playoff matchup between the Lions and Rams.

In the Playoffs, the Lions outdueled the Rams by a single point. Last night, it was even closer! 60 minutes were not enough and the game went into OT. The Lions won the toss, got the ball, drove right down the field with ease, and let David Montgomery punch it in for a TD. Game over.

Nothing gets more storybook than last year’s playoff matchup but it’s amazing to look back at this trade for the two franchise QBs. Matthew Stafford went on to win a Super Bowl in LA after prolonged agony in Detroit. Jared Goff is now the beloved son of Detroit and is one of the favorites to come out of the NFC this year.

Truly a trade that worked out, and you don’t say that often. Both are just good dudes too that you want to root for! Maybe this isn’t their last meeting of the year!

Today’s Trivia🧠

🏈In what year did the first ever Monday Night Football game take place?

  • A. 1995

  • B. 2006

  • C. 1970

  • D. 2011

  • E. 1986

On This Day…

HISTORY LESSON! In 1904, the Boston Herald refers to the baseball club from NY as the “Yankees”. The second time the Herald has referred to them as such. The “Yankees” did not become the official name of the club until 1913.

While the name Yankees comes from the Dutch name “Janke”, which translates to John in English, and the “J” in Dutch is pronounced as more of a “Y”, hence Yanke. Adding an -es for plural, Yankees. So Boston fans can thank themselves for popularizing the name of their archrival.

Talking Points

🎾An Italian Wins Hardware in the US

“This title, for me, means so much, because the last period of my career was really not easy,” said newly minted US Open Men’s Singles Champion Jannik Sinner following the match.

The 23-year-old is the No. 1 ranked player in the world and became the first Italian to ever win the United States Open (men’s singles). He now has six titles in 2024, including the Australian Open, and improved to 55-5 on the season.

The hunt for an American male who can win the US Open continues, and the 21-year drought is extended. The future of American Male Tennis is in great shape right now, and there’s ALWAYS next year!

🏈What Happened with Tyreek Hill?

Tyreek did also celebrate his touchdown by getting “detained” by his teammate

The sports world lost its mind for about 20 minutes when all of a sudden Tyreek Hill was detained by the police on his drive into the stadium. What the heck actually happened?

It seems that Hill was pulled over for speeding while driving into Hard Rock Stadium about 3-hours prior to kick-off for the Dolphins season opener. Following what the police officer described as an “altercation”, Hill was detained. Fans posted to social media pictures of Hill in handcuffs on the side of the highway.

Teammate Calais Campbell, who stopped to show support for Hill and try to de-escalate the situation, was eventually also put in handcuffs for ‘being too close to the scene of the crime’. The two were both released and played the game.

In his postgame presser, Hill opened up on the situation, “what if I wasn’t Tyreek Hill”? Food for thought…

🏈 Rapid Fire Sunday Takeaways

  • Despite bad stats (14/29, 93 yards, 0 TD, 0 INT), Caleb Williams was able to win his first game in the NFL against a Titans team that wishes it had as many weapons as Chicago!

  • Josh ‘Superman’ Allen totals 4 TDs to lead the Bills to a 14-point comeback victory over the Cardinals. Kyler looked better than we’ve seen him recently. Could be an up year for the Cards

  • Trouble in New York, Cleveland, and Cincy. All three franchises wanted to show a lot more than they did on Sunday. The Giants and Browns both seem to have a QB issue and the Bengals have a juice issue. We’ll see how quick these teams can get back on track

  • Saints drop 47 points on struggling Panthers! Derek Carr passed for 3 TDs in a blowout win. The NFC South will be very interesting with them and the…

  • Tampa Bay Bucs looked good! Baker, Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, and company seemed solid. This team was one series away from an NFC Championship berth last year! They are a good team!

  • Classic Steelers! They win with their QB 2 who didn’t score a single TD. Just 6 FGs! Justin Fields led them to victory but was that enough to secure the starting role for when Russ comes back?
