⚾️ Scully Calls 45-Innings in 29 Hours

There’s not many names bigger than Vin Scully in terms of sportscasting, and it’s not just because of his memorable voice. Vin put in the work, unlike any other.
On this day in 1989, sportscasting legend Vin Scully called two games in one day, in two different cities! Scully called a 10-inning battle in St. Louis, then took a trip down to Houston to call another game. That second game went 22 innings! If that wasn’t enough, he had the pleasure of calling a 13-inning game on Sunday. That brought his 29-hour total to 45 innings. NUTS!

6/3/25 Glue Gal OTD: Lauren Allred, Texas Tech Softball.
In their first Women’s College World Series, the Texas Tech Red Raiders were greeted by the winner of the last four National Championships: The Oklahoma Sooners. With the decisive game to advance into the National Championship going into the bottom of the last inning, Texas Tech needed a hero.
In steps Lauren Allred.
The Red Raiders best hitter of the season had one out and two women on, the winning run on third, all Lauren needed to do was put the ball in play. When it mattered most, she did. A sac fly to deep right field got the winning run across the plate. The Red Raiders advance, they’re going to the finals.
With the weight of the softball world on your shoulders, nothing is easy. A sac fly or a grand slam, a walk off is a walk off.

Yesterday’s Moments

⛳️ US Open Qualifiers, Who’s In and Who’s Out?
The Stump Short Story: When you’re a big name professional golfer, playing in a qualifier can be a little bit of a shot to the ego and heart. But these guys may still go out there and try to get into one of the biggest tournaments of the year.
Some big names to qualify: Cameron Young, Erik van Rooyen, Bud Cauley, Emiliano Grillo
Some big names who missed the cut: Max Homa (who carried his own bag), Rickie Fowler, Marc Leishman, Sebastian Munoz, Bubba Watson, Lee Westwood
Why it Matters: There’s a variety of ways for golfers to secure an automatic spot in the US Open, winning previously, winning on tour in the previous year, world golf ranking, or through a local multi-qualifying stage, which is where these players find we’re about to discuss found themselves. Here’s who battled yesterday for a chance to compete at the US Open at Oakmont in two weeks. For guys who are down on their luck on the season, a chance in the US Open means a few things: an opportunity to get back on the right track, and a made cut brings in some serious coin. Playing in a tournament like the Open means everything.
🏈 Lions’ All-Pro Center Retires
The Stump Short Story: This one might not have made massive headlines yesterday, but it surely will matter to the Detroit Lions this season. Frank Ragnow, an All-Pro center, announced yesterday he’s retiring after seven seasons in Detroit due to health related reasons. Ragnow battled through a torn pectoral muscle last season.
Why it Matters: Ragnow was a first-round pick out of Arkansas in 2018 and was widely considered one of the best at his position in the league. He leaves a gaping hole at one of the most important positions on the offense, one that the Lions weren’t expecting to fill so soon. The Lions did select Tate Ratledge in the second round of this past years draft, but has limited experience playing the position, as he was a right guard at Georgia for three years. The Lions need to find an answer at the position, and quick, if they want to return to their winning ways.

🥎 WCWS Championship Set
The Stump Short Story: The Women’s College World Series will have an inter-state finals affair, as Texas Tech and Texas each won on Monday to advance. Texas will play for the natty for the second consecutive year, while Texas Tech will be making their first appearance in program history following a six-year absence from the NCAA tournament.
Why it Matters: This will be the first time in 5 years that the Oklahoma Sooners will not be playing for the national championship. While this is bad for Sooner fans, it’s really good for the sport. Texas Tech went out and got the most sought after transfer in softball, NiJaree Candy, who became the first college softball player to receive an NIL deal north of $1M. It’s paid dividends. The game of softball is growing on the national stage, and fast.
