Well if you sat here and told me that after Thursday that the President’s Cup would be tied heading into the weekend, I’d say you were smoking something serious. But here we are, tied going into the weekend. You combine that with an electric slate of Saturday College Football, the MLB final regular season series, and a crazy NBA trade, and now you really have something going. Welcome to today’s Stump.

Today’s Trivia🧠

🏈Texas is back! The Texas Longhorns are historically one of the best college football schools in country. Before being named #1 in the country a few weeks ago, when was the last time they held the #1 ranking?

  • A. 2022

  • B. 2004

  • C. 2008

  • D. 1995

  • E. 1985

(answer at the bottom of the Stump!)

On This Day…

🏈 Let’s talk about throwing around the pigskin today. On this day in 1969, Quarterback Joe Kapp threw for SEVEN touchdowns in a win against the Baltimore Colts. This feat has now been completed 7 times in NFL history.

The most recent was in 2015 and was done by Drew Brees. Before that, Nick Foles and Peyton Manning both did it in 2013. It’s been a while! Does this mean we’re due??? Andy Dalton is back, isn’t he🤔

What’s Worth Your Time

🏈College Football Gritfest of the Day

To be honest, there were a few to pick from this week. But I landed on one from Conference USA, two teams who desperately need a big win, and two teams who are looking for some serious momentum shifts.

Boys and girls, I’m excited to bring you down to Pitbull Stadium, the home of the Florida International University Panthers. At 6:00 PM ET, the Panthers welcome the Bulldogs of Louisiana Tech University. The two open their conference schedule with each other, and both are desperate for an FBS win.

The FIU Panthers are coming off a BRUTAL loss to FCS Monmouth at home in a 45-42 gritfest. They are 1-3 on the year and defeated Central Michigan in week one. The biggest part of their offseason came when they renamed the stadium after music icon Pitbull, but we haven’t seen much to cheer about in the on-field product.

Louisiana Tech is 1-2, defeating FCS Nichols State in an ugly 25-17 game in the opening week of the season. LA Tech went on to lose to NC State on the road and let one slip away in OT last week against Tulsa. LA Tech has been historically a solid G5 program, so their fall from grace this year has been surprising.

I’m going with the Bulldogs on the roads this game, they’re leaving Pitbull Stadium with a win.

Presidents Cup Day Two Recap

Yeah I mean the history of the President’s Cup is very much in the favor of the United States, but if you watched yesterday’s matches, you wouldn’t know. The international team came to play.

I don’t know much but I know this, when your back is against the wall, there’s only one choice but to fight back. That’s exactly what the international squad did.

After the Americans came out on Thursday and lit the golf world on fire by sweeping the day 5-0, the international squad had no choice but to fight back. They did that in a HUGE way yesterday. They came out and stunned the Americans, shell-shocked them, and really killed every piece of momentum they had.

After two days, it’s 5-5. Both teams have swept a day. It’s going to only get more electric as the weekend gets started.

Today's format features two sessions, four matches of fourballs, four matches of foursomes. With the score being 5-5, it’s almost like we’re starting from zero. But this time, it’s an all out sprint to the finish.

This was the first sweep for the international team since 2003 in South Africa. It’s time for the Presidents Cup to become more evenly matched, and I think we finally have it this year. With the fire of the Canadians playing on their home turf, it’s going to be truly a fight to the finish.

🏈 FAIL MARY 2.0! (7) Miami survives against Virginia Tech!

If you tuned into some college football last night to watch the phenom that is Cam Ward, you were in for a treat! It came down to the last play of the game, which was a mirror image of the infamous FAIL MARY! Check it out here if you didn’t see it!

Sometimes, we get absolute SNOOZERS on Friday for college football. Yesterday was not one of those days. We had an ACC showdown between (7) Miami and Virginia Tech. Miami came in an unbeaten 4-0, and the Hokies at 2-2.

Virginia Tech came to play last night. They capitalized off an early turnover to go up 7-0 two minutes into the first quarter. Cam Ward and the Hurricanes responded with TWO quick TDs that were ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ type of moments. It went back and forth all game, and in crunch time Ward drove the boys down the field in a WILD drive that included a chest pass, a trip ‘n catch, and a 4th down conversion. If that seems confusing forward THIS VIDEO to the 15:30 mark and it will all make sense.

It ended with a Hail Mary from Virginia Tech that needed 12 camera angles, 8 control centers, and a 100x zoom lens all to get no clear angle of what actually happened. The ball seemed to not be in the possession of any single player. After celebrations by both teams and a LENGTHY review, they overturned the TD call and called the pass incomplete.

What. A. Game. Miami is for real. Cam Ward is the real deal.

🏀 BLOCKBUSTER TRADE! KAT to the Knicks!

Wow wow wow! Karl-Anthony Towns has been traded to the New York Knicks in exchange for Julius Randle, Donte DiVincenzo, and a first-round pick! Wow! There’s a lot to unpack here, who won? Who lost? Did they both lose???

It was all set. The script was written. After Mikal Bridges signed with the Knicks, the four Nova boys were all together! Brunson, Hart, DiVincenzo, and Bridges. It was the stuff that movies would be made of…

AND NOW BOOOOOM! Donezo! Finito! Gonezo! Unreal! So let’s talk about this for just a second: Who won this trade? Is KAT really going to be the difference-maker for New York? We know what KAT is. He’s a big man that shoots a lot of threes and can have some good games. The last memory I have of KAT is not seeing him do much in the Western Conference Finals when the Timberwolves got dismantled by the Mavs.

The T’Wolves are so tough to beat because not only do they have Ant Edwards, but they also had two 7-footers in their starting 5. It was impossible to score consistently in the paint against them, and we saw that before their collapse in the WCF. Divincenzo and Randle will be great pieces for them, but this keeps them right around where they were. Not the favorites in the West, but a top 2 or 3 seed.

We’ll see how this pans out for both sides, but I know that Knicks fans are not the friendliest bunch. If KAT starts chucking up threes in crunchtime and it doesn’t go well…oh boy!

The White Sox Have Done It! Loss Number 121!

History for the Chicago White Sox! Yesterday they lost their 121st game of the season in a 4-1 loss to the Tigers. They broke a record that had been standing since 1962! That’s gotta count for something…right?

There were the 1899 Cleveland Spiders. There were the 1962 New York Mets. And now there are the 2024 Chicago White Sox. Yes the Cleveland Spiders were once a real team. The White Sox have etched themselves in the history books with their performance this season.

This year they had 3 separate losing streaks of 12 or more games. The longest of the three was a 21-game losing streak, which tied the all-time American League record.

They were also eliminated from playoff contention on August 17th. This was the earliest a team had been eliminated from contention since 1969. Life has come at Chicago fast after they won their division in 2021.

Despite the ugliness, they fought before hitting loss number 121. They went on a 3-game winning streak before this loss which was uncharted territory for them this year. I guess there’s a little bit of respect for that. Long offseason for Chicago!

Yesterday, but the Good Stuff
