Kansas Football: Giant Killer

A 2-6 Kansas team went through a gauntlet, but came out clean on the other side...

I mean, seriously, could we had ask for more of a CRAZY College Football Saturday than yesterday? From Auburn and Kansas keeping their bowl game hopes alive, to Florida, Ohio State, and Arizona State making statement wins, we got treated yesterday. If we had just one wish, it would be to make today just as crazy in the NFL!

On This Day…

🏀 On this day in 1960, Philadelphia basketball legend Wilt Chamberlin nabbed the most rebounds in a single NBA game.

Wilt “The Stilt” was an absolute animal on the boards, but nothing beat his 55 rebound performance on this day in the 1960 season against the Boston Celtics. If you go to the “most rebounds in a game” stat, Wilt and Bill Russell will be the only two names you see for the first 13 games! The two account for 19/20 of the most rebounds in a game in NBA history.

Today’s Stump Story…

🏈 Kansas Football: Giant Killer

University of Kansas football had really high expectations coming into the season, but a rough start left them looking in the mirror. What they saw, was that dog in them.

If you told me that a 2-6 Kansas team would turn around their season and be sitting at 5-6 heading into the last week of the season, I may believe you. Kansas was losing, but they weren’t getting blown out, they were losing close games. They were on the cusp of winning multiple games, but just couldn’t pull it out.

Kansas is led by a veteran QB and RB duo in Jalon Daniels and Devin Neal, respectively. They have a great head coach in Lance Leipold. Jeff Grimes, their offensive coordinator, is highly respected. They have all the pieces. After the 2-6 start, they knew they had to turn it around.

The thing standing in their way? Three ranked opponents, back-to-back-to-back. No team under .500 has ever won three games in a row against ranked opponents. We can’t use that stat anymore.

Kansas ripped off three straight wins against (at the time) #17 Iowa State, #6 BYU on the road, and yesterday against Deion and #16 Colorado. All of this came on the heels of their 29-27 loss versus #16 Kansas State. An absolute gauntlet for any team in the country, let alone a 2-5 Kansas team in the midst of a disappointing year.

Jalon Daniels has becomes a true leader on the offense, making impressive plays with both his legs and his arm. While the running game has taken off, the defensive side of the ball has done enough to give the Kansas offense enough leeway to win football games.

This 3-game run was capped off with a win over Colorado yesterday. Not just any win, a dominating win. Kansas ran away with the game in the second half, literally. They pounded the football between the tackles, outwilled Colorado, outpowered them. Devin Neal, Kansas star RB, was as dominant as ever yesterday. Amassing 207 rushing yards on 37 carries, 80 receiving yards on four receptions, and 4 total touchdowns.

With a win next week against Baylor, Kansas will qualify for a bowl game in an unimaginable season.

Quick Hitters

🏈 UPSET ALERTTTT: In the world of college football, upsets are pretty common, but this many in one day??? That and more of the big games from yesterday:

  • (21) Arizona State defeated (14) BYU, their second loss in a row. BYU took a shot at a hail mary, but their prayers were not answered.

  • Florida stays red hot in their defeat of (9) Ole Miss at home in the Swamp. Ole Miss’s playoff hopes are officially squandered.

  • (2) Ohio State answered the call against the 10-0 (5) Indiana Hoosiers. A close game going into half, the Buckeyes came out firing to end the game in a lopsided score, 38-15.

  • (6) Notre Dame hammered (19) Army, 49-14, in a showdown at Yankees Stadium. A miracle season from Army is cut shorts by the Fighting Irish.

  • It’s been a forgettable season for the Oklahoma Sooners, but they won’t forget yesterday for awhile. The 5-5 Sooners handed (7) Alabama their third loss of the season, becoming bowl eligible while simultaneously ending Alabama’s chances at making the College Football Playoff in their first season under Kalen Deboer.

  • (15) Texas A&M and Auburn battled for FOUR overtimes! A&M fought back from down 14 at half to extend the game, but in the fourth OT, Auburn stopped Texas A&M’s two point conversion try to win it 43-41. The Tigers keep their bowl game hopes alive and move to 5-6 on the season, an instant SEC Classic!

⚽️ The NWSL has a champion! The Orlando Pride celebrated their first NWSL title yesterday after their 1-0 win over the Washington Spirit. Barbra Banda scored the games only goal late in the first half, all the Pride needed to secure the title. Women’s soccer legend, Marta, and Banda were the two stars for the Pride all season long, so it was fitting one of them were able to punch home the lone goal that gave them their first championship.

🏀 The eyes of the women’s college basketball universe converged on (3) USC and (6) Notre Dame last night in a battle of two potential final four teams. The Irish led wire to wire and had USC fans heading for the exits early, as Notre Dame handed USC a 74-61 loss. This is arguably the biggest regular season win for the Irish in about a decade, and shows that the once great program under Muffet McGraw is ALLLLL the way back.
