On This Day…

Manaea No-Hits Sox

In Oakland A’s history, there have been seven no hitters. One of which was secured by the big left Sean Manaea against the Boston Red Sox.

On this day in 2018, Manaea pitched an absolute gem at home against the Boston Red Sox. It was an absolutely masterful 108-pitch display against a Red Sox team that had won 17 of their first 19 games, and eventually went on to win the World Series.

⛳️ Justin Thomas Ends 3-Year Drought

There’s not many humans like Justin Thomas that just deserve to win, and yesterday, he finally got what he deserved at the RBC Heritage in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

One of the most liked golfers in all of the sport, Justin Thomas has gone through more ups and downs than any other player on tour over the last three years. He’s had missed cuts, top-10 finishes, missed FedEx Cup qualifications, and even some top of the leaderboard competitions, but not once did he win.

His last win was the PGA Championship at Southern Hills in May of 2022, but 2023 was a brutal year for JT. In that year, he missed the FedEx Cup for the first time in his career and was left off the United States Presidents Cup roster. Going into the last day of the RBC Heritage this year, JT was tied for second, the first time all week he wasn’t the leader starting the day.

With people questioning whether it would be the same old JT, he teed off and played the final 18 in front of roaring crowds and massive galleries. Thomas struggled early, but made some massive putts on the front nine to keep his chances alive. Him and second place finisher, Andrew Novak, battled all day long. The two took each other into extra golf. All Thomas needed was one playoff hole, as he sunk a 20-fot birdie putt to officially end the drought.

The pure emotion on Thomas’ face when that putt sank is something that will be in PGA Tour videos for years to come. It was a moment I’m sure JT questioned that would ever come after his recent struggles. His trials, tribulations, struggles, heartbreaks, all came out at once when that big putt fell. Much like Rory felt after his Masters putt fell down, JT finally had a massive weight off of his shoulders.

With that win, JT moves high enough inside the world rankings to basically be a lock for the US Open and needs to stay in the top 50 over the next month for The Open in Britain. Get on the JT train, because it’s rolling hot and heavy right now and I’m throwing more coal into the engine.

🏀 First Round Blowouts

Waking up yesterday, my hopes for the first round of the NBA Playoffs Sunday action were high, but what I got instead were some lopsided victories. Don’t get me wrong, the Heat kept it close and in general I don’t mind an NBA blowout because you usually see some big time runs or crazy highlight reels from the winning teams. But c’mon, now, it’s the playoffs! I want juicy games that go coast to coast, wire to wire, late game action. Whatever, maybe I’m acting spoiled. I’ll tell you this much, I hope these games tighten up just a SMIDGE as the action continues.

Thunder def. Grizzlies, 131-80.

Celtics def. Magic, 103-86.

Cavs def. Heat, 121-100.

The last one may have seemed like a blowout early, but the Houston Rockets tightened things up late in the fourth. That being said, the duo of Batman & Robin, Steph & Jimmy, showed out yet again for a ROAD WIN! The only road win of the day! Warriors def. Rockets, 95-85.
