🏈 Manning Goes Number One

It’s officially less than a week until the NFL Draft, but it was on this day in NFL history that the Indianapolis Colts changed the trajectory of their franchise for the foreseeable future.

On this day in 1998, Peyton Manning, a QB from the University of Tennessee, is selected first overall by the Indianapolis Colts. The two won a Super Bowl together in the 2007 season, and Manning was inducted into the Colts Ring of Honor in 2017 and the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2021.

🐐 Lee Corso: A Career in Football

For anyone who was born after the year of 1986, you only know Lee Corso as a broadcaster. But if you know Lee Corso at all, you know he wasn’t just the face of college football, he was the soul.

Corso, who spent his entire life around the game of football, officially announced his upcoming retirement from the cast of College Football Gameday following week one of the 2025 College Football season. One last performance for a man who will be 90 years old when the broadcast airs.

A quarterback and cornerback in his playing days, Corso was a star at Florida State and took on a coaching role there upon his graduation in 1957. He went on to coach at Maryland and Navy as an assistant, and then spent the next 15 years as a head coach at Louisville, Indiana, and Northern Illinois.

It wasn’t until his ESPN College Gameday career that Corso took the nations heart. He was on the first episode of the program in 1987, but it was in 1996 that the show, and Corso, really went to another level. You could even argue that the growth of this show is directly responsible for a piece of American’s obsession with the sport. In October of the ‘96 season, Corso chose his game winning prediction by revealing a “Buckeye” mascot head to announce he thought Ohio State would be the winner of the game while the show broadcasted live from outside Buckeye Stadium. The crowd went bananas, and it’s been a tradition ever since.

Since then, he has gone 286-144 in 430 selections in which he wore everything from a Stanford Tree to a leprechaun suit, he even yelled at UGA the Georgia bulldog and carried an alligator to pick Florida. He was truly committed to the bit, like a real entertainer.

Corso worked through a health scare in 2009, when he suffered a stroke that left him unable to speak for awhile. He battled through physical therapy and din’t miss a single game that season. A true warrior.

When Corso steps away from the College Gameday set, a piece of college football will walk away with him. It seems relatively ironic given the current state of college athletics changing as it has in previous years, and will continue to change. This isn’t your grandfathers college football, for better or for worst, that’s not the conversation I’m trying to get into. When Corso signs off for the last time, the grandfather of college football will be leaving with it.

Thank you, Lee. You’ve made every single person who tuned into College Gameday’s life just a little bit brighter.

The Hot Stove

🏈 Rodgers With Tell-All

There’s been a lot of Rodgers talk over the last few months, but he still sits in free agency pool unsigned. On the Pat McAfee show yesterday, Rodgers let loose on the state of the Jets, his playing status, and just normal Rodgers stuff.

This was the first public Rodgers interview since his release from the New York Jets last month, and in a nearly 45-minute appearance on the Pat McAfee show he really let it all go. He revealed that he’s still considering retirement, and also that he’s open to just about any situation. Rodgers is known for being a little eccentric, so the fact that this free agency process is a little unusual, should be no surprise at all. Things may clear up a little after the conclusion of the NFL Draft, as teams try to solidify their QB of the future.

Rodgers detailed in the interview that his focus since then end of the season has been about his life off of the field, which has certainly taken away his attention from football. He discussed his relationship status, his personal commitments, and time with family. He also took shots at the New York Jets, here’s a link to the full article from ESPN if you’re interested, because things got JUICY!

⚾️ Jazz Chisholm EJECTED Over Bad Call

Man. Before we get started give this quick clip a little watch. You tell me if this was a ball or a strike.

The idea of fully automated umpired in baseball has seemed so far fetched for so long. People have said there needs to be a “human element” in terms of calling the game. When you see calls like this it’s tough to fight for that side of things. Yesterday, Jazz got ejected for his disagreement for this egregious call.

Jazz later took to X to express his displeasure, with an expletive. The tweet was quickly taken down afterwards but the damage was done. He’ll get a fine for his actions, but again the league should take notice, because when calls are this bad, something has to happen.

🐍 Venom Almost Causes Rangers Pitcher to Miss Start

Hours before Texas Rangers pitcher Patrick Corbin earned his first win of the season last night, his start was in doubt because of an unknown bite to his ankle. The doctors for the team concluded that Corbin’s ankle had been bit and whatever had done the damage must’ve had some sort of venom, because his ankle swelled up like a balloon. After some treatment and an ankle wrap, he was able to go out there and throw 5 1/3 innings and allow just one run in the Rangers 3-1 win over the Los Angeles Angels. What an absolutely wild story coming out of the MLB early in this season.
