STUMP STORY OF THE DAYāļø
Adam Scott: The Face of the Majors
After some uncertainty, Scott extending his Major streak to an absurd number is one of the most impressive golf runs that NOBODY is talking about.
Every golf season there is four āMajor Championshipsā, tournaments that just mean more, more money, more acclaim, more eyeballs, more pressure, more everything. The four tournaments are the US Open (taking place this weekend), the PGA Championship, the Masters, and the British Open. These tournaments are often more difficult to get into, you have to be playing good golf at the time, be a former winner, or qualify through a series of qualification tournaments. One man, Adam Scott, has become a regular in these types of tournaments.
The 43 year-old Australian is a highly respected competitor. Heās won all over the world and been doing it at a high level for quite a long time. He has just one major championships, the 2013 Masters Championship, and it hasnāt been because of a lack of opportunity. Scott has participated in a staggering 92 straight major championships. 92! That streak dates back to the US Open in 2001! This guy has been playing in Majors 4 times a year since I was one-years old.
This US Open was one of his closest calls in his streak. He had to play a qualifying tournament in Springfield, Ohio, in which he went to playoff holes with fellow Australian Cam Davis. Davis ended up winning, and Scottās streak was in real danger of being broken. Following a shake up of the Official World Golf Rankings, Scott jumped up one spot from World No. 61 to World No. 60. It just so happens that the top 60 players in the world are automatic qualifiers. Scott is in!
To put some more context on this streak, letās think back to 2001. When Scott started his streak it was late August at the US Open. The #1 song was Fallinā by Alicia Keys, Scottie Scheffler turned 5 four days after the tournament finished, and Tiger Woods hadnāt been divorced or in multiple car accidents (sorry, we love you so much Mr. Woods). Thatās how long this guy has been playing big time golf.
Scottās streak is second to only one man, the bear. Jack Nicklaus played in a WHOPPING 146 major tournaments in a row. Scott would have to play in every major until 2037 at the US Open, which takes place at Pebble Beach. Does Scott, at 43, have 13 years of major-level golf in him? Iām not sure. I also donāt really care.
Jack was a robot, a different breed, one of a kind. I love this Scott story because heās been doing it for SO long at such a high level. He hasnāt won a whole lot, only 14 total times on the PGA Tour, but heās just keeps being good enough to get in. Thatās grit. Scratching and clawing your way in, no matter what.
Scott is a unique symbol of consistency, resilience, and excellence at the highest level. I hope Scott gets to 100, and maybe gets another win along the way.
