STUMP STORY OF THE DAY✍️

LeBron James: US Flag Bearer

A career full of accolades, James begins his last summer Olympics with an honor never bestowed to a US men’s basketball player.

He’s done just about everything you can do in the game of basketball, he’s won NBA Championships, he has Olympic Golds, he’s been the MVP, he’s the all-time leading scorer in NBA history, heck he’s even gonna play with his son. There’s only one thing that was really left for him to do: be the first US NBA player to carry the stars and stripes.

During each Olympic opening ceremony since 1908 in London, each country has been led out into the event space by an athlete or delegation representative bearing his or her country’s flag. It is typically voted on by the athletes or the captains of the different teams.

Twice before has a basketball player been named the US flag bearer, but both were women: Sue Bird in 2020 and Dawn Staley in 2004, respectively.

When Staley carried out the flag in 2004 in Athens, James was making his Olympic debut, he was just 19. That team won the bronze medal, the only non-gold since professionals were allowed to participate in 1992. He was apart of the 2008 and 2012 US gold medal teams, but skipped the games in 2016 and 2021. Now, at 39 he has returned for what is most likely his last Olympic appearance.

It has become increasingly obvious throughout the exhibition matches that this team will go as LeBron does. In both of the last two games against South Sudan and Germany, LeBron has entered the game in the fourth quarter of close ball games and has just taken over the game completely. He hit the game-winner in the fourth quarter with 8 seconds left in the victory over South Sudan, and had 5 HUGE points in the last 75 seconds of the win versus Germany.

Late in the fourth quarter, LeBron grabbed a tough rebound and was fouled on the way down. He landed hard on the ground right near the US bench and the guys came running. Not just regular guys, NBA All-Pros, future Hall of Famers: Joel Embiid, Kevin Durant, Jrue Holiday, among others. They were there to get up their King, their leader, their flag bearer.

Glue Guy of the Day

Defined: Glue Guy (Noun, Verb, Adj., etc.) - a person, thing, idea, or thought that holds together the larger group. Not the star, not the main character, but a hard hat and lunch pale type who knows its role. The GLUE of the group.

Fly Swatter

Really just one of those things you don’t really think about until it’s time to use it. Then it’s SO clutch. I just feel like it’s the best thing around.
