Geno Auriemma Chasing History

No other Coach has won more, but he hasn't done it alone...

Another beautiful Wednesday to open up The Daily Stump! Today, we’ll tell the story of Geno Auriemma’s legendary head coaching career and the woman who has been by his side the whole time (other than his wife). It wouldn’t be a true Stump without checking in on the Cleveland Cavs, so check out today’s CAVS TRACKER! Other than those two electric reads, we’ll head to New York with the Jets, Dallas with the Paul-Tyson fight, and Washington D.C. to check on Ovi and his leg... LET’S GET STUMPIN!

On This Day…

🏈 On this day in 1983, then New York Giants running back Butch Woolfolk ties the NFL record of 43 attempts rushing.

Why does this matter? It doesn’t really. Other than the fact that this guy has a DOPE name and he ran the ball 43 times in a game, that’s true BULL status. I bet the dude smoked a cig after the game too, no cold bath or anything. Just pure grit and grime.

Today’s Stump Story…

🏀 Geno Goes for History!

Have you ever won at something 1,217 times? Well, Geno will.

When Geno Auriemma took the head Women’s Basketball coaching job at the University of Connecticut, the program was in a pretty putrid place. Since then, Geno has taken the program to heights no one could have ever imagined.

Tonight, Geno looks to become the winningest coach in NCAA Basketball history, men’s or women’s. His record currently stands at 1,216-162, tied with former Stanford head coach Tara VanDerveer and her 1,216 wins. Geno has a win percentage of .884, a stat that almost seems fictional. This is the highest win percentage in a career all-time, as well.

The illustrious career of the 71-year-old has been highlighted by a lot of numbers. 1,216 is just one number, here are some other numbers that make out his career:

  • 11 National Championships

  • 111 wins in a row between 2014-2017

  • 6 perfect seasons

  • 23 final four appearances

  • 30 conference championships

  • 137 NCAA Tournament victories

  • 8 Naismith National Coach of the Year Awards

  • 2 Olympic Gold Medals

It’s no surprise that with all of those victories, so many accolades will come with it. The great thing about Geno, though, is he knows he hasn’t been alone in this process. And he’s right.

His assistant head coach and wingwoman, Chris Dailey, has been there every single step of the way. Not only has she seen every victory, she’s also led the team to a few of her own, stepping up when Coach Auriemma let the officials have it a bit too much or if he happened to be on leave for some reason.

The two of them have spearheaded the greatest program in all of college sports, and they could not have done it without each other, as they candidly admit.

So when UConn takes on Fairleigh Dickinson tonight, tune in for a minute, watch history happen in front of your own two eyes. It’s not just Geno out there, it’s Coach Dailey, too. Expect a reunion of epic proportions as the two face down the eye of history.

Quick Hitters

🏀 CAVS TRACKER: After a historic red hot 15-0 start to the season, the Cleveland Cavaliers have finally lost a game. They fell to the reigning NBA Champion Boston Celtics, 120-117, in Boston. It was an epic game that featured the Celtics leading for most of the game, but the Cavs scratching and clawing their way back to make it an exciting finish. Both teams stars, Donovan Mitchell and Jayson Tatum, showed up in the bright lights. The Celtics outmatched the injured Cavs, who played without one starter (Isaac Okoro) and their six-man of the year finalist Caris LaVert, while the Celtics are still waiting for one of their stars to come back from injury, Kristaps Porzingis. Get your popcorn ready for when these teams play each other down the road.

🏈 Latest move from the New York Jets! The Jets have fired General Manager Joe Douglas amidst this UGLY season. Man, talk about disappointment. The season is lost and they just keep making changes. Senior football advisor Phil Savage has been named the interim GM. With a name like Savage, maybe he can right the ship. Or maybe this ship is just too off course! The Jets are 3-8 heading into their bye week. They have Seattle after the bye.

🥊The Paul-Tyson Effect: The event cracked over 72,300 fans in AT&T stadium and reportedly brought in over $18.1M in gate revenue. The previous gate record in Texas was set by Canelo Alvarez and Billy Joe Saunders in 2021 at only $9M. Paul-Tyson clocked in as the ninth-highest combat sports gate ever in U.S. history and is the highest-grossing combat sport event outside of Las Vegas, Nevada. You can debate all day long about whether Jake Paul is a real boxer or not, but you can’t debate his draw. Hate him or love him, you watch.

🏒 NHL goal leader and 39-year old warrior legend Alex Ovechkin is officially listed as week-to-week with a lower leg injury. Ovi collided with Utah forward Jack McBain in Monday nights 6-2 victory. Ovechkin had already scored twice to move him just 27 goals shy of breaking Wayne Gretzky’s NHL record of 894. Ovechkin was in the midst of the hottest start to a season in his career, scoring 15 goals in the first 18 games. He currently leads the NHL in goals for the first time since January of 2022, and his Capitals sit in second place in the Eastern Conference. Get well, Ovi, you have history to make!

Trivia Answer:

B. The Game. It’s as simple as it gets. The Game. Nothing fancy for these brainiacs, straight to the point. No wasting time on coming up with a good rivalry game nickname, there’s studying to be done.
