On This Day…

āš¾ļø For the First Time Ever, Someone’s Perfect

In the history of modern baseball there has only been 24 official perfect games. 27 batters up, 27 batters sat down. Not a single person reaching first base. No human has ever pitched two in the MLB, either. But someone had to be first.

On this day in 1904, Cy Young pitches the first perfect game in modern baseball history as the Boston Americans beat the Philadelphia Athletics, 3-0. Cy Young, these day known as the award given to the best pitcher in each league, is the greatest pitcher in MLB history. He holds MLB records for most career wins, innings pitched, games started, batters faced, and complete games, along with three no-hitters and his one magical perfect game.

šŸ”ļø Stump Spotlight

He Is Inevitable.

ā›³ļø You Can Run, But You Can’t Hide from Him

After last years onslaught of wins it’s been a little bit of a shock to not see Scottie Scheffler in the winners circle yet in 2025, but that surely couldn’t last forever. He went to his home course this week and reminded everyone just how dangerous he can be when his game is firing on all cylinders.

It feels like all year we’ve been just watching Scottie creep behind the leaders a few shots back, waiting for the patented Scottie push into the lead, but it just hasn’t happened. Well, it still hasn’t really happened.

There was no need for Scottie to make an epic comeback this week, as he absolutely dominated the field from the first day on. Scottie posted a 61 on the first day (10-under), a 63 on the second day (8-under), a 66 on the third day (5-under), and rounded the weekend off with a Sunday score of 63 (8-under). I’m not great at math, but I can read a number, in total he scored 31-under par.

He took a total of 253 shots in all 4 days, which ties a PGA Tour record for lowest in a single tournament. Through two rounds, he was one shot off the Tour’s 36-hole scoring record. After three rounds he was up eight-shots, which was the largest 54-hole lead anywhere on Tour since 2011. And to make matters even more interesting, he had a chance to break the record for lowest score in a tournament on the 18th green but missed a birdie putt barely wide right.

It was an absolute master class from the hometown kid, who grew up just 20 miles south in Dallas, TX. Scheffler, who made his PGA Tour debut at the very same event in 2014 when he was a 17-year old amateur, is now the first golfer from a Dallas-area high school to win the tournament since 2007. He’s also the third ever to carry a wire-to-wire lead at the event, as well, and the first since Tom Watson did so in 1980.

In reality, Sunday basically turned into a battle for second place, which was won by Erik Van Rooyen. Jordan Spieth, also a Dallas native, had a special Sunday as his 9-under 62 shot him up 19 spots on the leaderboard and into a 4th place finish. It was his lowest round of the year and his best finish, too.

Along with his 14th career Tour win, Scheffler secured a cool $1.78 million check. With the PGA Championship just two weeks away at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, NC, it’s no surprise to see Scottie peaking at the right time.

šŸ€ Pacers Shock Cavs in Cleveland

Pacers def. Cavs, 121-112: To say that the Cavs were still a little rusty from their week off following a 4-game sweep of the Heat would be an understatement. They looked out of rhythm, lethargic, and down right ugly at times. One of the best three point shooting teams in the NBA, Cleveland only managed 9-38 from behind the arc, a scary 23.7%. This is not to say that I’m blaming pure rust on this game, that’s far from the truth. This Pacers team was running up and down the court on Cleveland, burying open three’s in transition and playing elite team defense, never allowing the Cavs to really get into a true rhythm.

Tyrese Haliburton was masterful, running the Pacers offense to perfection, consistently finding open shooters and never being afraid to take his shot when the opportunity presented itself. Andrew Nembhard had his best performance of this years playoffs, dropping in a team-high 23 points, including a 5-6 performance from three. All five starters scored at least 13 points, with 4 of the 5 topping at least 17 points. If the Pacers continue this type of play, it will be hard for the Cavs to survive this series, especially when it heads to Indiana.

šŸ€ GSW Win Game 7! Advance to 2nd Round!

Wow, the 7-seeded Warriors have gone on the road to win game seven after losing two straight! Who did the damage? Steph? Jimmy? DRAY?

No. None of the above. It was the Buddy Hield show in Houston last night! Yeah, that wasn’t a typo! Buddy Hield erupted for 33 points and tied a GAME SEVEN RECORD with 9 threes on the night! Buddy came out of the gates firing whih helped the Warriors get out to an early lead that they maintained throughout the contest. When it got to the fourth quarter, it was closing time, and Steph had 14 of his 22 in the quarter, which was a de facto NIGHT NIGHT for Houston!

It was a great season for the young Rockets. They will no doubt be back in the postseason next year with a young core that is still figuring out how to play meaningful basketball. The Warriors will now go on to face the Timberwolves in what is going to be an absolute SLUG FEST! AntMan has always said he wants the Warriors in the postseason, and now he gets his wish. Let’s see what happens!

šŸŽļø Piastri With Dominant Performance in Miami

McLaren had one heck of a Sunday in Miami as their drivers finish one-two atop of the Miami Grand Prix.

Oscar Piastri continued his dominant season as he claimed his sixth career win and fourth this season, finishing 4.6 seconds ahead of McLaren teammate Lando Norris. Reigning champion Max Verstappen held the lead for awhile in his Red Bull and positioned himself beautifully to hold off the two McLarens. But it was just delaying the inevitable, as Piastri would pass him on Lap 14, and Norris on 18. From that point on, it was all those two, nobody else could touch their rare air. Two years ago at Miami, McLaren was lapped twice, now they won that same race by over 35 seconds, an absolutely incredible achievement. Verstappen would finish in fourth place, just over 2 seconds behind George Russell of Mercedes.
