STUMP STORY OF THE DAY✍️

Feature Friday: Steve Blake

Calgary Golfer Steve Blake has been in a battle for his life, but this week, he’ll be battling to score low…

For those of you who followed gritty white basketball players in the early 2010’s, you might think this story is going to be about THAT Steve Blake. But I’d argue that THIS Steve Blake has an even more powerful story.

Blake, a Calgary, Alberta, Canada local is known as one of the best amateur players in the area. Blake is relishing every single moment he gets on the grass.

Eight months ago, Blake was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer. This weekend in Calgary the Rogers Charity Classic, a PGA Champions Tour event (the senior tour), will take place. Blake has played in it once before when he qualified as a local amateur. This year, Blake had to get in a different way. He wrote a letter. He explained his situation and his desire to play golf in the tournament one last time.

Blake, who had stepped away from the game to focus on his treatment, was ready to get back to it. Of course, there was no way that tournament leadership could reject his offer, they gave him a exemption into the tournament. Blake got back in the golf lab after getting the news.

The Rogers classic went one step further, allowing him to be paired with his family. His wife Kelly and two children Brooklyn and Conner will make up his team.

In all of Blake’s interviews leading up to this weekends tournaments, Blake has emphasized how important being positive and present have been to his battle, “You may be handed a death sentence, but it doesn’t mean life’s over. You’ve still got a lot to give, so get out there and give something.”

This tournament won’t be the end of it for Blake either, he wants more. He’s going to try to qualify for the US Senior Open, taking place this year in Newport, RI.

Golf has cleared his mind, allowed him to be present, and enjoy time with his family, “The more I have something like this tournament coming up to look forward to, the more alive I feel. I don’t feel sick. I feel like I’m just a normal guy who’s going to practice for this tournament coming up, and hopefully, I’ll be around for the next one, and so on and so on.”

Quote of the Day

“Persistence can turn failure into extraordinary achievement”

Matt Biondi

Wise words from a master of the sea. Biondi put this to use both as a swimmer and as a water poloist.

Song of the Day

Take Me Home, Country Roads

John Denver

A bit of country to spice up your morning. Even if you’ve never been to West Virginia, it feels like you know it all to well.

Glue Guy of the Day

Defined: Glue Guy (Noun, Verb, Adj., etc.) - a person, thing, idea, or thought that holds together the larger group. Not the star, not the main character, but a hard hat and lunch pale type who knows its role. The GLUE of the group.

Eye Black

In the nightmares of opposing kids.

Not one child athlete ever used the eye black to “reduce glare”.

No, these bad boys were to make the kids running across the field cry when they looked at you.
