On This Day…
Doug Smail is one of my all- time favourite Jets and on 12/20/1981 he set an NHL record for the Fastest Goal from Start of Game beating St. Louis Blues goalie Paul Skidmore after just 5 seconds. Smail is #8 on my Top 15 Jets 1.0 Goals list.

🏒 Winnipeg Jets’ left wing Doug Smail sets NHL record by scoring just 4 seconds into the game. This is the fastest goal from opening face-off to back of net in the history of the NHL.
The record has later been tied by Bryan Trottier and Alex Mogilny. Imagine getting into your seat 5 seconds late and seeing a 1-0 score…
Today’s Stump Story…
🏈 Woody Johnson Can’t Stay Out of the News
There must be some sort of whistleblower in the Jets facility because the news that’s coming out of NY is WILD..
Every NFL team has their problems, some more glaring than others, some more public than others. When it comes to the New York Jets, they have a lot of problems. One major problem has been the news that’s came out this week about their owner, Woody Johnson. And when I say news, I mean the plural NEWS.
The first story that broke this week was regarding Jerry Jeudy this past offseason. While the Broncos were shopping their former first-round pick around and looking for trade partners, the Jets were interested. As the story goes, Johnson was the one who vetoed the trade, citing his MADDEN rating as the reason why. Johnson commented on how low his rating was in the video game, and openly opposed the trade. Hindsight is 20/20, but Jeudy is having a breakout year in Cleveland and is fifth in the NFL in receiving yards.
The second story that came out was related to a game ball situation. The Jets registered their first win under interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich, a pretty common gesture when a head guy gets his first NFL win. Before QB Aaron Rodgers could speak about Ulbrich, Woody’s son Brick Johnson took another game ball and awarded it to wide receiver Garrett Wilson in a profanity laced speech.
This wasn’t the first incident with Brick and his other son Jack, as the two were supposedly caught bashing Jets players right outside the locker room after their week 17 loss in 2023. Woof. Johnson’s sons, who are both teenagers, have also apparently had increasing influence on major decisions. Johnson refers to articles, tweets, and of course, madden ratings, that his kids see and use them as leverage in critical decisions.
Lastly, apparently Johnson goes around and just talks crap about other people, pushing buttons, saying sarcasm-laced questions that creates a pretty toxic environment. After hearing all this, I’m not sure if Aaron Rodgers is and has been the problem in New York. It seems there may be plenty of problems in New York to talk about for days.
You’ve seen those planes flying messages over MetLife during Giants games telling owner John Mara to sell the team? Yeah, we may get one during Jets games now, too.
