The Cleveland Grit Machine
When you look at the Stump Scoreboard, you may see that the Celtics won their series against the Cavs 4-1 to knock Cleveland out of the playoffs. While that may seem like a lopsided series, and granted on paper it may have been, but as a noted Cavs fan, I’m damn proud of this squad.
Every time I was ready to say, “these guys are toast” when they were down 10 early, or when their star player missed Game 3 and 4 and I, along with the whole basketball world, were told to sit the hell down. This team showed so much fight, so much grit, and a whole lot of pride.
When Donovan Mitchell strained his calf and this team was dying for a scorer, Evan Mobley grew up. He was dominant this series, the Cavs best and most consistent player. Old Al Horford couldn’t stay with him, and neither could the big frame of Jayson Tatum.
Bench players like Marcus Morris and Caris LaVert kept them afloat, while Darius Garland struggled at times, he also showed promise and growth. The most impressive job was done by head coach JB Bickerstaff. Bickerstaff rallied the troops when it would’ve been so easy to just roll over and die. The Celtics were scared at times, they were scrambling. The final scores do not show how closes these games were player.
The Cavs were playing some WILD lineups, I’m not sure the lineup that finished the game had played together at ANY point this season. They rolled out a role player filled lineup, took it to the mighty Boston Celtics, and lost. But not without a fight. If you look at this Cavs team with anything other than pride as a Cavs fan and NBA team, you didn’t watch the same game I did.
