Good Morning, Stumpers!

🏈 Week 1 Storylines in the NFL

On This Day
🎾 Five Straight US Opens!

Now that the US Open has included, and we see the next two greats of the sport, let’s take a look back at some other dominance!
On this day in 2008, Roger Federer defeated Andy Murray in straight sets in Arthur Ashe stadium to win the US Open. Federer was a legend, this isn’t too surprising. How about this one, this win made it his 5th straight US Open title! Sheesh!
Today’s Trivia
We've got the second half of the NFC North facing off tonight. Curious to see where this goes: Who will win the NFC North this year? |
Glue Guy of the Day
🔴 🔵 🦬 That’s one way to go 1-0!

Not in the business of hyperbole over here at The Stump, but was that the greatest Week 1 game of all time last night? Holy Smokes that was crazy!!!
I mean talk about a rollercoaster of a game. In a rematch of last years Divisional Round matchup, all eyes were on the Bills and the Ravens when the Week 1 slate came out. The expectations were sky high for this game, and the game OVERDELIVERED, well at least from my unbiased perspective (……).
Three and a half quarters into the game, the Ravens looked unbelievable. Derrick Henry looked like he was 26 years old, the defense was flying all over the field, and half of Twitter was ready to hand over another MVP trophy to Lamar.
After the rushing onslaught by Henry and Co., the score rested at 40-25 with 6 minutes to go in the ballgame. The fans were leaving, Collinsworth and Tirico were already talking about what a statement win this was for the Ravens, and the headlines were being written.
It was at this moment, when even ESPN game probability gave the Ravens a 99.1% chance to win the game, when all hell starting breaking loose. The Bills started a drive and right under the 4 minute mark, the were able to punch in a crazy deflection TD to Keon Coleman.
Still up 8, the Ravens were in firm control with 3 and some change left to play. They handled the ball off to their workhorse, and in see-it-to-believe-it fashion he fumbled the ball because of an Ed Oliver strip! The Bills tookover and on the first play got the ball to the 1-yard line!
Coming into this game, teams trailing by 15 points in the fourth quarter with 4 minutes to play were 3-2,312.
You know where this one is going!
They scored. MISSED THE 2PT conversion. Had three timeouts. USED ALL THREE AND FORCED A THREE AND OUT ON BALTIMORE!
The Bills got the ball back with 90 seconds to go on their own 25 with no timeouts. Keon Coleman was an absolute machine for the Bills on this drive and almost single-handedly brought them to the redzone, where they set up a field goal.
Matt Prater, who joined the team on Thursday, who had only had one conversation with Josh Allen priot to the game, who barely knew his own teammates names, was asked to kick the game-winner, and IT WAS GOOD.
Unreal. Pandemonium. Prater.
1-0!
The BIG Moments

🏈 NFL Week 1 Storylines
The Stump Short Story: A few games to highlight here…
Friday Night ALERT! Chargers Bolt Up: We had a Friday night game in Brazil only being aired on Youtube with Rich Eisen and Kurt Warner on the call! Yeah… a lot going on there! It was the Chargers and the Chiefs, and the game was close throughout but you knew all game that the Chiefs were going to come out on top of a one score game. The stats of the Chiefs and Chargers records in one-score games was jarring! The Chargers had the ball left and had to play keep away, and it was Justin Herbert who looked good all night who got the job done with his legs. The Chargers looked good….real good! Quentin Johnston made a jump, Keenan looked like he was 25, and Omarion Hampton got his first taste of the NFL! Watch out AFC!
Somebody tell Aaron it’s not 2015: Coming into the week, the game total between the Steelers and the Jets was the lowest ever for a Week 1 game. The “experts” thought it was going to be a SNOOZER! That message didn’t get to the two offenses, because this one was a shootout! In his return to Metlife, against the team and coaching staff that wanted to move on from him, Aaron Rodgers went 22/30 for 244 yards and 4 TDs. The running game didn’t get anything going all day, but it was the air attack that helped the Steelers get the win against the Jets, 34-32. Justin Fields didn’t look bad as well against his former team. Chris Boswell hit the go-ahead 60-yard FG to help get his team the W!
Danny Dimes Goes Off! Nobody home for Miami: This Indy-Miami game was supposed to be close, but man oh man was it anything but. Before a late garbage DeVon Achane TD on 4th and Goal, the Dolphins were getting shutout by the Colts 30-0! Daniel Jones had 2 rushing TDs as well as 272 yards and a TD in the air as well. Sometimes you just need a fresh start, and Jones looked great in his new threads at Lucas Oil! Miami on the other hand looked bad….real bad! We’ll wait another week or two, but holy smokes the offense couldn’t get anything going! Colts win, 33-8!
New Sherriff in the NFC North: I’ve been on the fence about whether or not the Lions could repeat their success without their two coordinators this year. To be honest, before yesterday I truly thought that they wouldn’t miss a beat. Wow was I wrong because the Packers made the Lions look like a JV squad. The Packers won 27-13, but it was worse than the score makes it seem. Jordan Love threw a pair of TDs and Josh Jacobs has one on the ground as well. The run game was non-existent for Detroit with the ferocious, Micah-added DLine of Green Bay! Strong way to start their 2025 campaign!
The UGG FEST:
Broncos win UGLY against Tennessee, 20-12; Bengals win UGLY against Cleveland, 17-16; Rams win UGLY against against Houston, 14-9

🎾 Alcaraz def. Sinner to WIN 2025 U.S. Open
The Stump Short Story: For 15 years we were fortunate enough to see the three most decorated mens tennis players all playing the sport at the same time. Roger Federer. Rafael Nadal. And Novak Djokovic. After Federer, and then Nadal also retired, there was a hole in the sport. A need for the next greats. I don’t want to say this too prematurely, but we have found them. Although yesterday’s matchup was not as thrilling as some of their others this year, Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner met for the third time in a Major final this year yesterday, having split the first two.
Yesterday, in four sets, Carlos Alcaraz got the win. He had looked incredible all tournament, and even the mighty Sinner was not able to stop his incredible momentum. These two have now won the last 8 majors, and their ages are jaw-dropping…(Alcaraz, 22; Sinner, 24)! Hopefully we get to see this rivalry flourish for a while, the only question is who will come and win a major outside of these two next?!
