(answer at the bottom of the Stump!)
On This Day…
🏀 On this day in 1970, the Cleveland Cavaliers notched their FIRST NBA victory as a franchise when they defeated the Portland Trail Blazers, 105-103, in Portland, Oregon.
It took the Cavs 16 games to get their first win in the NBA, as they started the season 0-15. Woof. Quite the welcome to the NBA in Cleveland.
Today’s Stump Story…
🏀 The NBA Cup Preview
It is what it is, whether you’re a fan of the NBA Cup or not, at least the NBA is trying to make the regular season a little more interesting. Taking a page out of international soccer, the NBA Cup sponsored by Emirates, gets going today! Let’s dive into it!
For years, the NBA faced criticism for having a boring regular season. The NBA’s response? The in-season tournament. This will be the second annual in-season competition and will take place throughout November and into mid-December, with the championship taking place in Las Vegas on Tuesday, Dec. 17th.
The Emirates NBA Cup consists of two stages: Group play and knockout rounds. The first, group play. Here’s how the groups shook out:
West A: T’Wolves, Clippers, Kings, Rockets, Blazers
West B: Thunder, Suns, Lakers, Jazz, Spurs
West C: Nuggets, Mavs, Pelicans, Warriors, Grizzlies
East A: Knicks, Magic, 76ers, Nets, Hornets
East B: Bucks, Pacers, Heat, Raptors, Pistons
East C: Celtics, Cavs, Bulls, Hawks, Wizards
One team from each group will advance, as well as two wild card teams. The wild card teams are selected as the team from each conference that had the best record in group play and finished second in its group. The knockout round is a single-elimination tournament and the teams will play for a prize pool and the NBA Cup championship trophy.
The Lakers won the inaugural trophy and even raised a banner into the rafters to celebrate the victory. Who will win this year? Only one way to find out. Tune into the Emirates NBA Cup tonight on TNT and through the next 5 weeks.
Stump Prediction: The Mavs get RED HOT and win themselves an NBA Cup.
Yesterday, In a Nutshell
🏈 Monday Night Football: Read something before the game that the public was heavy on the Rams for last night’s game. Naturally, the Dolphins went to LA and got the win over the Rams! No standouts in a relatively quiet game. Tyreek Hill totaled 16 yards but caught what turned out to be a pivotal third-quarter TD! The Dolphins move to 3-6 and the Rams fall to 4-5! Dolphins win, 23-15!
🏀 Cleveland Cavs tracker! The Cleveland Cavaliers extender their winning streak to 12, becoming just the EIGHTH team in NBA history to start the season with twelve straight victories. This is only the second time it’s happened since the turn of the century (2015-16 Warriors & 2002-03 Mavericks). Enjoy the ride, Cavs fans, this is a run that not many fans have got to witness!

🏀 Oklahoma City Thunder big man Chet Holmgren suffered a fractured pelvic a couple nights ago after a hard fall as he went to challenge an Andrew Wiggins drive to the basketball midway through the first quarter. The team announced that Chet will likely miss eight to ten weeks with the injury, as Holmgren had to helped off the court and was in obvious pain. Through the first nine games, he had averaged 18.2 points, 9.2 rebounds, and 2.9 blocks per game this year.
