(answer at the bottom of the Stump)
On This Day…
🏈 On this day in 1899, Walter Camp published his 1st All-American football team in Collier’s Magazine. College football still uses the award as a way to recognize the best crop of players in the country. Camp is considered the father of American football.
The name ‘Walter Camp’ has become synonymous with high-level collegiate football athletes, as all college athletes dream of being named one of the best at their respective position.
Today’s Stump Story…
👋 Black Monday: Who’s In, Who’s Out
One day into the NFL offseason for those not into the playoffs and we’ve already seen some coaching movement in the NFL Black Monday.
OUT - Jaguars HC Doug Pederson: After a 4-13 season that featured starting QB Trevor Lawrence missing the latter half of the season with a shoulder injury and concussion. Pederson was hired to “fix” Lawrence, but his inconsistency persisted and the team’s overall success struggled because of it. Pederson was the head man for 3 years and experienced some initial successes, but the franchise has lost 18 of its past 23 games.
IN - Jaguars GM Trent Baalke: Baalke has had a rollercoaster of a tenure in Jacksonville since he was brought on as the director of player personnel in 2020, eventually being promoted to GM 10 months after his hiring. He was the decision maker behind drafting Trevor Lawrence first overall, but also the guy who hired, and then fired, Urban Meyer. Under Baalke the team has won a playoff game, but also struggled to have identity on offense and defense in the past two seasons while facing critique the franchise is doing nothing to find said identity. Either way, he survives the initial wave of firings in Jacksonville.
OUT - Seattle Seahawks OC Ryan Grubb: After just one season in Seattle, head coach Mike Macdonald announced yesterday that they would be moving on from Grubb. While the season featured some great successes, like the breakout of WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba and another strong season from Geno Smith, there were also some lows, like only being able to win 10 games and miss out on the playoffs. Macdonald said in an interview that the offense was moving in a different direction than he had hoped and envisioned for the future. AKA, he didn’t like what he was seeing. Grubb out.
IN - New York Giants Staff: The surprise of the day came when Giants owner Jon Mara announced that the franchise would not be firing head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen. The Giants have obviously not been playing well, and calls from fans to fire the current brass have gotten very loud in recent weeks. Mara added that while the staff will be kept, he is "about to run out of patience”. The first step in the turnaround is going to have to come at the QB position, as starter Daniel Jones was cut midseason and Drew Lock will be a free agent. NY will have the third pick in the upcoming draft, a selection that will surely be a massive piece for whether the staff keeps their jobs or not come this time next year.
OUT - Bengals DC Lou Anarumo: The Bengals missed the playoffs by the skin of their teeth this year, and most, if not all, blame can be put on their defense. The offense, led by Joe Burrow, was one of the best in the entire league. Burrow led the NFL in passing yards and touchdowns, while his star WR Ja’Marr Chase won the triple crown, topping the NFL in all three major receiving categories (yards, touchdowns, and receptions). The Bengals defense also featured the NFL sack leader Trey Hendrickson, who finished the season with 17.5 sacks. The defense managed to turn it around in their five-game win streak to end the season, but it wasn’t enough for Anarumo to keep his job.
Quick Hitters
🏈 FCS Championship Game: The dynasty lives on in Fargo, North Dakota! North Dakota State University wins their 10th FCS Championship in the past 14 years. The Bison came into this game underdogs against Montana State, who entered the game at 15-0 and the #1 team in the country, but NDSU jumped out to an early 14-0 lead. A second-half surge by Montana State brought the Bobcats all the way back to a 3-point deficit. The NDSU championship pedigree came out in the 4th quarter as the Bison came with a bruising 9-play, 5-minute drive to put the game on ice. An onside kick recovered by the Bison put a bow on the game, NDSU 35, Montana State 32.
🤕 The Mavericks suffer another injury as star PG Kyrie Irving is expected to miss at least two weeks with a bulging disk in his back. This injury comes just a few weeks after Luka Doncic’s calf strain on Christmas Day. Doncic was seen riding around on a scooter last Friday and was barely able to put pressure on the injured leg. He’s expected to be reevaluated at the end of January, but the true timetable of his return is not known. The Mavs are 0-3 without Irving and Doncic in the lineup and currently sit at 20-16 on the season, good enough for T-6th in the Western Conference. The defending Western Conference Champions will have to keep the boat afloat while they're without their two stars.
🐻 The Chicago Bears have asked permission to interview Dallas Cowboys Head Coach Mike McCarthy. The Cowboys have been very wishy-washy on the future of their head coach and team owner and GM Jerry Jones has refused to commit to McCarthy. His contract with the Cowboys officially ends Wednesday. McCarthy is a highly-respected head coach and has gone 49-35 since taking the job in 2020. Multiple Cowboys players have openly backed the return of McCarthy as the head coach. Chicago is looking to replace former head coach Matt Eberflus, who was fired in late November.
