🏈 Detroit Dreaming!

Not often do statistics blow me away, but the fact that the Detroit Lions are 10-1 for the first time in NINETY YEARS blew me away.

It was 1934, the song of the year was “Moon Glow” by Benny Goodman, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the New Deal, the first Master Golf Tournament took place, and the Detroit Lions were in their inaugural season.

Former NFL owner George A. Richards purchased the Portsmouth Spartans, moved the franchise to Detroit, and changed the named to the Lions. That year, the Lions would get off to a sweltering hot start, 10-1. Yesterday, the Lions defeated the Colts 24-6, marking the first time since 1934 the Colts started the season 10-1.

The Lions are undefeated on the road this season (6-0), and remain the last undefeated road team in the NFL. Detroit’s head coach, Dan Campbell, arrived in 2021 and the team has increased their win total every year since he took over. The Lions were 12-5 last season, appeared in the NFC Championship game, but lost to the 49ers.

The Lions have won nine-straight games, the only other time that has happened? You guessed it, 1934. Ninety years later, history is repeating itself. The defense hasn’t allowed a touchdown in 10 straight quarters. Yesterday was the third time Detroit has allowed fewer than 10 points in a game, the first time since 1983. It’s a year of “First times since” for Detroit, but can it be the year of “first Super Bowl”?

This year, it seems like it really may be Super Bowl or bust. Detroit is red hot, they are the most consistent team in the NFL, and they are led by one of the most passionate and unrelenting coaches in the NFL. The Lions have the run game, the pass game, the defense, and the right attitude to make it there.

🏈 A good day in the NFL, here’s some quick highlights:

• The Bears gave the Vikings all they had in overtime, but it was Minnesota who kicked the walk off field goal to win it. 30-17, Vikings.

• The Dolphins look like their alllll the way back as Miami’s offense exploded for 34 points in their blowout win over the Patriots. 34-15, Miami.

• The Cowboys and their back up QB, Cooper Rush, have been getting ALL the hate the last couple weeks. Yesterday, the Commanders were on the wrong side of a pissed off Dallas team. 34-26, Dallas.

• The Chiefs narrowly escaped the Panthers in Carolina, as Bryce Young looks to be finally living up to the No. 1 overall pick hype. 30-27, Kansas City.

• The long awaited season-debut of Tommy “Cutlets’ DeVito was spoiled by Baker “Chef” Mayfield and the Bucs. 30-7, Bucs over Giants.

⚽️ Real Madrid has an embarrassment of riches with Mbappe and Vinicius Jr, but for some reason the team hadn’t be really firing on all cylinders. Yesterday, the two switched positions for the first time this year. Vini Jr. moved inside, Mbappe to the outside. Something finally clicked. Mbappe put Madrid ahead in the 43rd minute, thanks to a brilliant ball from Vini Jr. There’s been a lot of Real Madrid hate this year, can this finally be the move that puts them over the top?

🏀 The UCLA Bruins stay RED HOT! The No. 5 ranked team in the country took on the powerhouse No. 1 South Carolina Gamecocks, and took them down! That snapped Dawn Staley and South Carolina’s 43-game winning streak, their first loss since the 2023 Final Four, when Caitlin Clark and Iowa managed to get into the national championship. UCLA dominated from start to finish, trailing at halftime for the first time since Dec. 21, 2021.
