STUMP STORY OF THE DAY✍️
The Bryson DeChambeau Revival
Whether Bryson came out victorious at the US Open or not, he was a winner at Pinehurst No. 2 in many ways.
Bryson DeChambeau pulled off one of the most impressive victories the golfing world has ever seen. If you watched golf for the first time this weekend, you wouldn’t believe me if I said at one point in his career he was sort of a villain. What changed? When did Bryson become so likable? Let’s dive into it.
To start, the US Open is often heralded as one of the most challenging tournaments of the golf season. When it’s played at Pinehurst No. 2 in Pinehurst, North Carolina, it is an absolute grind for the players. It’s hot, it’s loud, it’s tough as all hell, and the course is relentless. Many players crack, lose their cool, or even crumble on a national stage. With this comes an opportunity for some players to rise above the rest, be exceptional, and go down in history.
In the case of Mr. DeChambeau, whether he was victorious or not this past weekend, this is a true redemption story. Bryson has quietly started to become the crowd favorite and the most likable guy in the game of golf. It was not long ago that the golf world was divided in the Brooks Koepka vs. Bryson beef, and many were on the side of Brooks.
Bryson landed on the golf scene as a bit of an outsider. He was technical, highly technical. He approaches golf in a different manner than the average PGA golfer, and extremely different than any amateur. He uses science, data, angles, and more of a physicist’s approach than an athlete. This was different, and golf lifers are typically pretty slow to embrace change.
Bryson was seen as weird, and different, and many doubted that his madness would ever work. Many made fun of him for his approach. That was until he won the 2020 US Open. From there, a lot of people changed their perspective on him. They thought he was cocky, arrogant, better than the game because he approached it in a different way. Then Bryson went to LIV, and the golf world had even more reason to dislike him. In the Ryder Cups, he slowly started to change that narrative.
He was amazing in all of the Ryder Cups, bringing high energy and enthusiasm. Since his rise in Ryder Cups, Bryson has become a different person. He’s become a showman, an entertainer, constantly interacting with the fans, hitting epic shots, and mashing big drives. He spends his off time training on the World Long Drive, hitting moonshots with some of the best in the business. I think he owes a lot of his new high-energy showman persona to that time on the World Long Drive. Those guys know how to get a crowd going.
When Bryson teed off on Saturday, cheers of “USA, USA, USA” rained down on the first fairway. His heavy fist pumps and fearlessness wow crowds and he never shies away from showing emotion.
Bryson has completely changed the way almost all golf fans think of him, his high level of play aside, he is the entertainer the PGA needs. While Scottie is unreal, Scottie is stoic. He’s unflappable but doesn’t show a lot of emotion. Bryson is what Tiger used to be: high energy and fearless. We need more Bryson’s in the game of golf.
