STUMP STORY OF THE DAY

Brenden Rice - Newest LA Chargers WR

A Rollercoaster of Emotions: Brenden Rice

The NFL Draft is always an emotional three days for prospects all across college football. Some wait longer than other for their names to be heard, some don’t hear it all. For Brenden Rice, the weekend was full of emotion for more than the typical reasons.

Rice is the son of NFL legend Jerry Rice, and was a exceptional player in his own right as a receiver at the University of Southern California. He spent his lead up to the draft grieving the lose of one of his “brothers” and former teammates. His best friend, Keith Miller III, was found in his apartment in early April nonresponsive. Rice spent his draft weekend in Dallas, Texas at the funeral instead of in Detroit at the draft and celebrating.

To add on to this Rice slipped in the draft. A projected 2nd-3rd round pick, Rice was selected in the 7th round by the Los Angeles Chargers. As Rice signed his rookie contract, a void lingered, one that could not be filled with any sum of money or football success.

The call from Chargers GM Joe Hortiz and Jim Harbaugh to Rice was extremely emotional. When asked how he was holding up, Rice responded with, “Struggling”. He stepped away from the funeral to take the call, and the sense of relief from Rice when he heard he was being drafted was a small glimmer of light in a dark week.

Rice was a pillar of strength this past weekend, as he not only attended the funeral, he was a pallbearer and delivered a touching eulogy. One of the more impressive quotes from is a testament to his character, “I don’t know what happened to make me drop, but I’m glad God gave me the ability to focus on [Miller], and I felt as though God, as well as Keith, brought me back to my faith. Now begins the journey up the mountain once again. You will feel my pain”.

Trying to mourn while waiting for a life-changing phone call is a rollercoaster of emotions I can’t even begin to imagine. While Rice may not have been able to enjoy the day, one hopes that Rice can make an impact on the field ASAP, he deserves that celebration.

Rice now looks to head right back to Southern California as he joins the Chargers, a place he claims that he was “praying to end up at”. Brenden, you have the full support of the football community behind you!

🎙SONG OF THE DAY

Family Ties - Charles Wesley Godwin

Most of you probably know this guy as the opener for Zach Bryan, but he’s good by himself. This song hits. It’s a beginning of day or end of day vibe, maybe even when you’re out for a nice walk midday. Versatile. Don’t question it.

Talk about a guy who just knows his role. Good for the hairdryer. Good for the electric razor charge. Good for that one singular time you had to bring your phone charger to the bathroom for your half-hour scroll or your shower music. Just the absolute epitome of glue!

C. Jerry West! The Lakers and West lost to the Boston Celtics in a 7-game series in 1969, and West became the first and only player to ever win an NBA Finals MVP while being on the losing team.
