Storylines from Detroit

The dust from Day one of the NFL Draft has finally settled, let’s take a look at some of the craziest storylines from night one!

  1. The obvious one: The QB onslaught! Of the first 12 draft picks, 6 of them were Quarterbacks. Let me quickly name them for you, in case you forgot: Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye, Micheal Penix Jr., JJ McCarthy, and Bo Nix. It was a WILD night. Only one other time in NFL history has there been 6 QBs taken was in 1983. Jim Kelly, Joe Montana, and Dan Marino all came out of that class. 3/6 were HOFers, I’ve never heard of the other three. Will that be the future of this year’s draft class? Only one way to find out…

  2. Offensive Dominance: The first 14 picks were offensive players. FOURTEEN. That is the longest the draft has gone without a defensive player selected, by a wide margin. What does that say about the future of the NFL? Well, we all know it’s an offensive game right now, the rule book and the game trends all tell us that. I think it also tells us how teams can find value in defensive players later in the draft. It also gives an insight into what analytics and decision-makers value in their young players. They want young offensive talent, and they want it FAST.

  3. The Rich Get Richer: With this MASSIVE run of offensive players, that left some really high-quality prospects on the board when the back half of the first round came around. Think of Dallas Turner to the Vikings, Laiatu Latu to the Colts, and Byron Murphy to the Seahawks. Hell, the best corners in the draft were still on the board at pick #22, where the Eagles got an absolute STUD in Quinyon Mitchell. These are guys that are going to help get these already good teams over the hump and into the Super Bowl conversation. It seems like every year we ask the same question: “How did ______ drop that far in the draft?”. Well, folks, stuff like this is how that happens!
