Neal Shipley, Week of a Lifetime, Wins Low Amateur at 2024 Masters
To end the Masters every year, we go to Butler Cabin where we have Jim Nantz and Masters chairman Fred Ridley congratulate the winner of the tournament. Alongside them, we have the winner of the past year’s tournament (Jon Rahm in this case) as well as the winner of the Low Amateur.
This year, it was 22-year-old Neal Shipley.
Shipley was only at this Tournament because of a phenomenal shot he hit at the 2023 U.S. Amateur at Cherry Hills Country Club in Colorado. He hit an absolute dart leaving himself with a tap-in to be the runner-up there and clinch his spot here at The Masters.
After shooting an even Par on Thursday and then 3 over on Friday, he made it to the weekend. He was the only amateur to make the cut this year, and as luck would have it on Sunday he was paired with the player he idolized and dressed like as a kid, Tiger Woods.
Fitting because they had started the week together as well. Last Monday at 7:00 in the morning, Shipley went to range and was the second one there. Yeah, you guessed it, second only to Tiger.
Being just 22 years young, Shipley as well as his caddie and longtime friend Carter Pitcarin now have had a week they will remember forever.
The Ohio State grad student becomes the second-ever Buckeye to win low amateur at The Masters. The other, oh just all-time legend Jack Nicklaus.
Got to play at Augusta with Tiger Woods and now with the win is mentioned with the likes of Jack Nicklaus.
How can you not be romantic about Golf.
Neal, we love the hair, we love that you don’t scream golf at first glance, and we love to juice you bring to the golf course. It’s been great to see you play all Weekend and we’ll be on the lookout for you in future Tournaments! This have been your first Masters, but surely not the last!
