THE DAILY STUMPED🔮

ON THIS DAY 🗓️

On this day in 2019, Gregg Popovich passed Lenny Wilkins to become the all-time winningest coach in NBA history. On that day, he recorded his 1,413th win.

Pop, a five-time NBA champion and 2023 NBA Hall of Fame inductee has five NBA Championships and has been the head coach of the San Antonio Spurs since 1996. He is widely regarded as one of the best coaches in the NBA history. He’s also one of the all-time great personalities.

STUMP STORY OF THE DAY✍️

The Ugly Details of the Ippei Mizuhara Theft

The sports world was sent into a tizzy when Shohei Ohtani, the $700 million dollar man, was all of a sudden the face of an illegal betting scandal. When news broke that Shohei’s interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara, had stolen upwards of $16 million from the Japanese baseball star, the sports world immediately did was it always does, assumed the worst.

Sports fans all over the world thought, “Well, of course, it’s a cover-up, Ohtani was betting on games just like Pete Rose!”. Everyone now questioned what the future of the Dodgers’ newest star was going to look like, suspension, bans, tainted career, the list went on and on.

Yesterday, Ohtani was officially exonerated from all wrong-doing, as Ippei was in front of the court and released on bond while trial awaits. So how did this all happen?

To start, when Ohtani first came to the US from Japan, Ippei helped him make a bank account in Arizona where his salary was to be deposited. Ippei had all the information for the account and even blocked his agents and accountants from accessing the account. Ippei went as far as even falsely identifying himself on the phone with the bank as Mr. Ohtani, lifting a online banking suspension and allowing the bank to transfer funds to Ippei’s personal phone.

The transfer amounts got bigger and bigger as time went on. The first wire was in 2021 at about $40,000, soon, they were upwards of $500,000. The ugly stats are as follows:

  • 19,000 bets over three years

    • averaging about 25 per day

  • $10 - $160,000 individuals betting range

    • Average of about $12,000 per bet

  • $142 million in winnings, $183 million in losses

    • -$41 million net profit (sounds about right)

Then Ippei used his access to Ohtani’s accounts to pay off his debt. He tried to ghost his bookmakers, but they started to threaten Ippei that they would reveal his secret to Shohei. A text from his bookmaker says it all":

“Hey Ippie, it’s 2 o’clock on Friday. I don’t know why you’re not returning my calls. I’m here in Newport Beach and I see Ohtani walking his dog. I’m just gonna go up to him and talk to him and ask how I can get in touch with you since you’re not responding? Please call me back immediately.”

This is something out of a movie. My favorite line comes in a text from Ippei to his bookmaker:

“I have a problem lol.”

Yes Ippei, yes you do! Ippei is out on bail right now but is expected to face upwards of 30 years in prison. Justice for Shohei!
